When traveling internationally, you very much want to bring all the gadgets you need if in case you got some work to do, you wanna play some games, or maybe you just want to watch some Netflix on your trip.

Then it’s best to know that some airlines put a limit on how big of a battery you can bring in your devices and powerbanks, and it’s also important to know that most countries have different types of outlets with different voltages.

So here’s a list of things you may want or need to know when flying internationally with your favorite devices.

Know the Regulations

The first step to bringing powerbanks and batteries on international travel is to know the regulations. Check the regulations of the airline you’ll be flying with, as well as the regulations of the countries you’ll be visiting.

Some airlines and countries have restrictions on the size and type of batteries and power banks you can bring on board. Most airlines only allow you to carry power banks and devices with batteries that do not exceed 100Wh or about 26000 mAh.

It would be best to check, depending on your airline, what regulations on battery packs are imposed on your country when traveling.

Choose the Right Powerbank

When choosing a powerbank, think of what you need based on a powerbank’s battery capacity, weight, and how fast it can charge.

Check the Voltage and Bring the Right Adapter

Make sure to check the voltage of the country you’ll be visiting. Different countries have different voltages, so you’ll need to make sure your devices and powerbanks are compatible with the voltage of the country you’ll be in.

Most commonly, this is why appliances from the USA can’t work in the Philippines and vice versa without the use of a voltage transformer.

But for the most part, devices like laptops, tablets, and phones will have a charger that works in most countries since they operate between 110-240V.

But for more specialized and highly advanced gadgets and equipment, it’s probably best to make sure your device can run on the voltage set in the country you’re visiting.

That brings us to the next step, making sure you get the right adapter to charge your devices and powerbanks in different countries.

As most countries, like having different voltages, power outlets can vary from country to country. You’ll see some with only two holes, some with three, and some shaped differntly.

Our best advice is to either buy the specific adapter and charger needed when you’re in the country or buy a travel adapter that can adjust to a wide range of power outlets in a number of countries.

Pack them on your Carry-On

Powerbanks and batteries should always be packed in your carry-on luggage. Avoid packing them in your checked luggage, as the temperature changes in the cargo hold can damage them.

ALL airlines will require you to remove any powerbanks and/or gadgets with batteries in your check-in luggage to make sure nothing dangerous can happen when they are stored in cargo.

Don’t try tp hide them in your checked-in luggage as the crew will most likely find them thru the x-ray machines and you would end up unpacking your luggage or it gets offloaded.

In any case, it’s also best to carry them with you when traveling as you wouldn’t really want to run the risk of losing them when checked-in, especially if you have multiple transfers. It’s also nice to watch some shows or charge up your device if in case the plane doesn’t have any outlets for charging.

Charge before you Leave

Make sure to charge your powerbanks and batteries fully before you leave. This can ensure that you have enough power for your trip.

You wouldn’t really want to run out of battery in just the first 2 hours of your long 13-hour flight now, would you?

Most planes have USB charging ports in each seat but they have very low power rating (normally 0.5W) so charging your devices from them will take a lot of time.

In some new fleets, there will also 110V power outlets in the economy rows but they are not available on every seat.

Use them wisely

Use your powerbanks and batteries wisely during your trip. Use them only when you need to, and avoid overcharging your devices or powerbanks as this can cause them to run out of battery charge fast.

Especially when you’re on a trip in a remote place where power may not be readily available, it’s best to be wise and only use them when needed.

Be mindful of others

Be mindful of others when using your powerbanks and batteries. Especially when in crowded places or in planes where space isn’t available for everyone and where it’s expected that everyone behaves appropriately and not cause a disturbance to others.

So don’t use them in public places where they could cause a tripping hazard, and avoid using them in quiet places where you might disturb others.

Dispose of them properly

When your trip is over, you may want to dispose of some devices that may have been damaged in your travels or you simply don’t need them anymore.

So be sure to dispose of your powerbanks and batteries properly. Don’t throw them in the trash, as they can be hazardous waste. Instead, dispose of them according to the regulations of the country you’re in.
