Right off the bat, we can say that both laptops look professional with paint jobs that make them look premium. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 has this fabric-like feel on the surface, while the Huawei MateBook D 15 2021 resembles aluminum with a smoother matte texture.
Open the lid, and you’ll be greeted by the display and keyboard. The IdeaPad 5 has a webcam at the top bezel with a privacy shutter, while the MateBook D 15 2021 has a pop-up webcam hidden between the F6 and F7 keys.

When it comes to dimensions, the MateBook D 15 2021 measures 357.8 (W) x 229.9 (D) x 16.9 (H) mm, and weighs 1.56 Kg. The IdeaPad 5, on the other hand, measures 356.67 (W) x 233.13 x (D) 19.9 (H) mm, and weighs 1.66 Kg. The former is slimmer and lighter.
The Huawei MateBook D 15 2021 features a 15.6-inch IPS Huawei FullView Display with 1920 x 1080 resolution and TUV Rheinland Low Blue Light Certification and Flicker Free Certification. The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 also has a 15.6-inch IPS display with 1920 x 1080 resolution. But no mention of any certification.
Both are bright screens with good viewing angles and accurate colors, and slim bezels. However, we find the MateBook D 15 2021 to be more immersive due to the slimmer top bezel.
The MateBook D 15 2021 is powered by an 11th-gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 with Intel Iris Xe Graphics, while the IdeaPad 5 is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 4600U with AMD Radeon Graphics. Both have their merits, but the 11th-gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 is newer and has a higher Turbo Boost frequency. When it comes to memory, both are equipped with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD.
Both devices are running on Windows 10 Home with Office 365. However, both have exclusive features that tip the scales to either device. In the case of the IdeaPad 5, it has Lenovo Vantage, which is a dashboard that helps you maintain the laptop and inform you of its status and health. It lets you access system status, system health, security, power management settings, firmware updates, and identify warranty status. It’s a great software feature as everything you need to know and access to keep your laptop running smoothly is consolidated in one app.
For the MateBook D 15 2021, you’ll get the Huawei PC Manager that lets you do a full checkup of the laptop’s system and optimize it, adjust power settings, and update drivers. What separates this laptop from the rest is its exclusive features like Multi-Screen Collaboration, which lets you control your Huawei phone straight from the MateBook D 15 2021. You can even take phone calls from it.
This is not to be confused with Microsoft’s Your Phone feature, which is also available on this laptop. So, technically, you can pair a Huawei smartphone and another Android device here.
You can also transfer wirelessly transfer files using Huawei share by tapping your Huawei smartphone’s NFC at the MateBook D 15 2021. The PC Manager can also back up your photos and videos to the laptop for safekeeping.
The Huawei MateBook D 15 2021 is equipped with WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, USB-A 3.2 Gen1, 2x USB-A 2.0, USB-C, HDMI, and 3.5mm headset and microphone 2-in-1 jack.
The Lenovo IdeaPad 5, on the other hand, has WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, 2x USB-A 3.2, USB-C, HDMI, SD Card Reader, and 3.5mm headphone/mic combo.
Providing power to the MateBook D 15 2021 is a 42Wh battery with a 65W USB-C charger. The MateBook D 15 2021 can run for two hours with just 15 minutes of charge. You can even SuperCharge your Huawei smartphone or other devices if needed.
The IdeaPad 5, on the other hand, has a larger 57Wh battery with a 65W charger. However, it’s an AC adapter, so you can’t charge other devices with it. But on the upside, it can also be charged using the USB-C port if you have a powerful charger.
Both the Huawei MateBook D 15 2021 is priced at PHP 52,999USD 903INR 76,562EUR 860CNY 6,577, while the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 is priced at PHP 36,000USD 613INR 52,006EUR 584CNY 4,468, so you might be asking…
Both laptops have their own merits. For the Lenovo IdeaPad 5, it will appeal to those on a budget. The Huawei MateBook D 15 2021, on the other hand, is more expensive, but we’re still inclined to get it based on its design, newer CPU, a better trackpad, and exclusive features that will benefit those already in the Huawei ecosystem. So, if you’re already a Huawei smartphone or tablet owner and looking for a laptop that will expand the capabilities, get the MateBook D 15 2021.
