After the successful launch of the realme 11 series last year, its successor is now about to debut the Philippines — the realme 12 series. There will be two variants that will be released in the country – the realme 12+ and the realme 12 Pro+ – and we managed to get our hands on both devices.
In this article, we’re giving our first impressions of the realme 12 Pro+ 5G, the premium variant of the two. If you also want to check out our initial impressions of the realme 12+, you can read about it here.
Given the impressive capabilities of the realme 11 Pro+ 5G last year, we do have high expectations from the realme 12 Pro+ 5G. But what do we think of it so far? Well, I suggest you read on.
The realme 12 Pro+ 5G comes in the same minimalist signature yellow box with black lettering as before. There’s nothing too special about it, but turn over the box and you can see the specs at the back, including the new Periscope and Sony IMX cameras, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset, and the 120Hz curved display.
With that, you already have a good expectation of what the new realme 12 Pro+ 5G offers. Open the box, we find a neatly packaged device together with essential accessories. These include a free jelly case, a sim ejector, the phone guide, a Type-A to Type-C charging cable, and the 67W SUPERVOOC fast charger.
Moving to the phone itself, it features a similar design language as last year’s realme 11 series. The back panel features the same textured faux leather-rubber combination without 3D stitching. The zipper-like design that runs down the middle of the phone is carried over as well.
The bezel of the camera module itself is different too. You get a fluted bezel design, which makes the realme 12 Pro+ 5G look a lot more premium. It honestly reminds me of the fluted bezel you’d find on Rolex models like the Datejust and the Day-Date.
On the right side of the phone, you will find the volume rocker and power button which are positioned well for one-handed use. At the bottom, there’s the dual nano-sim card slot, USB-C port, and one of the loudspeakers. At the top, you will find the other loudspeaker
The design change isn’t revolutionary, but at least it makes the phone look a lot more premium compared to before.
Flip the phone over, and you get a 6.7-inch full HD+ curved display with 2412 x 1080 resolution, 394ppi with 950 nits of peak brightness, 120Hz refresh rate, and 240Hz touch sampling rate. At the top of the screen, there is a pinhole cut out for the new 32MP front camera. The fingerprint sensor is baked into the display located at the center bottom.
Like before, you get slim bezels all around, giving you a larger display to work with. The colors are quite vivid out of the box, and like before, you do get the option to choose whether you want to set screen colors to vivid or natural. There’s also an option to choose the color temperature to your liking.
One of the main highlights of the realme 12 Pro+ 5G is the cameras. The triple rear camera is highlighted by a 50MP main shooter, paired with a 64MP periscope portrait camera and an 8MP ultrawide. Best of all, it can even do up to 120x zoom, which is crazy.
For video, the camera can record up to 4K @ 30fps. There’s also stabilization, but it’s only available at 1080P. We’ll talk about it more in the full review which is coming soon so stay tuned for that.
We were able to take some really great photos using this phone, and you can check them out in the gallery below.
Under the hood, the realme 12 Pro+ 5G is now powered by an Octa-core Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset with an Adreno 710 GPU. Our unit comes with 12GB of RAM, which can be expanded by an additional 12GB for a total of 24GB. It also has 512GB of internal storage which is a lot bigger than the one available in the realme 11 Pro+ 5G. Android 14 comes standard skinned with realme UI 5.0.
We expect big performance improvement in terms of gaming, especially with the new Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. However, we didn’t have time to play games yet. The battery on the realme 12 Pro+ 5G remains to be at the 5,000mAh capacity, which is the same as before. There’s also 67W SuperVOOC fast charging when you need to recharge the phone.
At first glance, you might not think that realme didn’t change a lot on the new 12 Pro+ 5G compared to its predecessor. But once you start playing around with it, the upgrades are like night and day.
