As the old adage goes “if you can’t beat them, join them”. Better yet, in the case of Microsoft, re-engage Windows users who are running a non-genuine copy of Microsoft’s desktop OS by giving them free upgrade to the upcoming Windows 10.
Based on their research, Microsoft has uncovered that a huge chunk, 75% on their recent estimate, of all Windows-based PCs in China are running on pirated copy of Windows which shows that their efforts, if there are any, in battling piracy in the said country have so far been futile.
In an interview with Reuters, Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s EVP of Operating System, is quoted saying that “We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10.” He added that the Redmond-based firm is tapping various organizations, such as Lenovo, Qihoo 360 and Tencent to turn this plan in to reality.
It’s still unclear whether Microsoft will implement this outside of China, but this is definitely a good news for those who cannot afford to buy a licensed version of Windows (or those who just don’t want to pay for a legit copy). On the other hand, we’re not sure how paying Windows users will react to this bold move from the software giant.
Windows 10 is expected to be released in the market sometime in summer which is said to feature a new browser codenamed Project Spartan.

Windows Critic says:
this upgrade is not stable. i’ve been using the windows 10 since last year. a lot of bugs and problems you may encounter along the way. better stick to your stable OS, then upgrade if it is already stable.
been there done that.
Huh? says:
I think you understand naman that this upgrade is the consumer-ready Windows 10, and not the Windows 10 Technical Preview you are using?
Did you also read before installing your Windows 10 Technical Preview that you will really encounter a lot of bugs, as it is a preview version, and not a “developer-ready” version (which is a lot stable and is perfect for apps testing)? It’s not even at the Consumer Preview stage (meaning, ready for preview to developers/IT pros, etc.) yet!
SpiderWak says:
Digest says:
Windows Critic
Binasa mo ba agreement and information regarding Technical Preview?

Bweeeeeehhh LOL!!
Vekou X Aitenshi says:
Haha, sana alam mo yung ininstall mo. The technical preview’s purpose is to let the power users have a go at the unfinished OS to provide feedbacks and report bugs to Microsoft so that these will be incorporated on the stable release. It also lets the developers test and modify their software for compatibility on the next release, allowing faster roll-out of applications upon the OS’s release.
Been there, done that.
Hayzzzz. Kaya nga preview eh, hayzz talaga.
Evolution says:
This guy is stating an opinion, and making a suggestion that’s probably addressed to the computer-not-so-literate, and you fckers are on his case about it?
Reading your replies, I can’t help but smirk at you neanderthals pretending to know everything there is to know about the latest OS. Get a job, and stop spreading bullshit across the internet, you inbred freeloaders.
unknown says:
@ Evolution
good point there. i think they just missing the point of that comment. which, hopefully won’t happen to them.

Cyberfunk says:
Hahaha, ano nangyari pre? dami mo fans ah.
Faust says:
wow. thats great news but when will they implement it? me excited. ive got only the technical preview.

Around June – August release ng Windows 10
NotaSheep says:
Well either this is a trap to weed out pirate users… or… maybe this is the best thing! i pay for steam games so… maybe if Microsoft Xbox games become a thing for pc…? :)
Easy E says:
Yes it’s a TRAP!
e@sy Engot says:
tumigil ka maguupgrade ka din naman
AkinLang says:
I think Microsoft is giving away the OS but charge for the applications and apps for it. The idea is to set-up the world on a single OS platform making development on it a lot easier and more consistent.
This will be good for developers as they only need to master one platform. Similarly, the support teams will find it easier supporting only one platform.
gadgeteer says:
It is very obvious, micro$oft is trying to recreate the old tactic scheme they used in windows xp, they let and encourage piracy of their OS, and when your system heavily relies on their platform comes the big BOOM!!! they force you to license your software or face criminal charges and closure of your business.
the question is, will people take the bait again?
jason says:
How can they force you to license their OS when they are giving it for free? Smh
Summer says:
Completely unacceptable example. Try again.
abuzalzal says:
While they will never ”force” you to buy a legit copy, they’ll just probably cripple your OS to the point na hindi na tolerable yung annoyance (eg. lots of pop-up ads, some disabled key features etc.)
Eh kung libre pala ang upgrade, people will just go for the pirated route para magkaroon ng legit copy ng Win 10, eh nagbenta pa sila kung ganun din lang ang kahihinatnan!Nagsayang sila ng sandamakmak na pera sa R & D and Marketing……Microsoft is not fooling us with this
This is without a doubt, A TRAP
Vekou X Aitenshi says:
wired_boy says:
yes that is a possible reason @Vekou but but but their windows store is slightly and ever more improving, and im liking it though, downloaded a coupla games and apps.
imagi says:
Licensed windows 8 user here. I’m conflicted on this news as it makes my voluntary purchase of licensed windows useless. No incentive for those of us who bought an original windows?
mark says:
You bought a license for Windows 8, not 10. Why expect some sort of incentive just because you’ve purchased Windows 8 legally? It’s your responsibility to purchase genuine products.
imagi says:
@mark. as I have said, my copy of legit windows 8 has become useless since it is no different to a pirated copy, come the upgrade to windows 10. are you a representative of MS? customer satisfaction is a factor and as a customer, I’m not satisfied with their plan to roll out windows 10 with the plan of pirated copies becoming legal. It just feels I got ripped off, like buying something from the mall at premium price and then finding out later that the same product was given away free. I bought a legit copy of windows precisely for the security and the updates, now even those using pirated copies are going to benefit from it.
alto says:
how come it become useless ? you paid a legit copy means revenue for them, more purchasing power for them to be used for R&D, marketing, etc.
why would us, legit users, should have an incentive in the first place ? hm… come to think of it, the upgrade for win 8.1 is already free if you have an existing license for win 8.
parang sinabi mo na din sayang yung license na binili ng mga game dev sa Quake and Doom engine kasi eventually in open source din ni carmack.
wiinows says:
Maybe Legal Windows USers will get rebates on purchases on the Windows Store or something…
or will have PLUS features that basic upgraders don’t have
imagi says:
@alto
there was an updated report regarding this free windows 10 update. apparently, “the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Nongenuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered nongenuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered nongenuine or mislicensed after the upgrade.”

Fap says:
Microsoft is not that dumb to allow this to happen…….SILA PA!!!
abuzalzal says:
This is too good to be true, Microsoft will probably allow you to upgrade from your old Non-Genuine OS pero trial version lang siguro ibibigay just to get you into Windows 10.
AA says:
probably probably siguro siguro siguro
