ASUS surely had the confusion coming when they started naming their flagships by generation instead of by screen size. Although to give them credit, they didn’t really expect their budget 2014 Zenfone first generations to become so popular, namely the Zenfone 5. Fast forward to MWC 2018, we now have the second generation, or should we say new generation, Zenfone 5. So, what does it bring to the table? Let’s find out. Here are the 7 best features of the Zenfone 5. You may also watch our video version of it.

Seems to us, that ASUS had enough of playing catch-up this 2018 as they usher in a new aspect ratio to follow — 19:9. If you could recall, the company was late to the aspect ratio craze when they released their first 18:9 device, the Zenfone Max Plus, just this January. This time around ASUS takes the lead, as the Zenfone 5 now touts an even taller aspect ratio.
That’s not all though, by stretching the aspect ratio to 19:9, ASUS was able to cram a 6.2-inch screen into a 5.5-inch body. A pretty impressive feat, to say the least.
Apart from creating a new aspect ratio trend, ASUS also wants to take charge of further introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the world. In fact, they are calling the Zenfone 5 an “Intelligent Phone” rather than just a “Smart Phone”. To achieve this, they are equipping their latest flagship with an AI-focused chipset in the form of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636. The new chip from the renowned manufacturer has a Neural Processing Engine (NPE) that helps in perform tasks that involve AI learning.
As we’ve mentioned earlier, the Taiwanese brand is pushing towards introducing intelligent devices. As such, almost every aspect of the Zenfone 5 is AI related and the cameras are no exception. The company’s new flagship boasts AI photography features such as AI photo learning, AI Scene Detection (16 different types), Real-time portrait, and Real-time beauty. They are truly pulling all the stops in order to make your shooting experience a lot easier and smarter.
Yes, folks, it doesn’t stop at the cameras as ASUS also equipped the Zenfone 5 with an AI display. The new Zenfone standard bearer now has an Auto Color Temperature feature and an always-on smart screen.
Now, this may sound a little weird at first but it does make a lot of sense, in the long run. ASUS also equipped their latest Zenfone with AI ringtone capabilities. Basically, the phone adjusts its volume based on the user’s surroundings. No more surprise bursting calls when you are in a meeting or in a quiet place.
Did we mention that the Zenfone 5 is laden with AI features? Well, we have to again. The brand really wants their newest flagship to embody AI, so it’s only natural that its core performance is also assisted by artificial intelligence. So, the latest Zenfone will feature AI Boost technology and a feature called BoostMaster. In a nutshell, BoostMaster optimizes performance by studying how the user handles the device to ascertain the best performance setting.
Nope, we are not yet done with Artificial Intelligence. The Zenfone 5 is an AI device through and through as even its battery features intelligent management. ASUS is calling this feature Smart Charging. Basically, during the day, the phone activates fast charging while at night time it slows it down to allow for overnight charging. By doing this the brand is claiming that the phone will be able to prolong and preserve battery shelf life.
And that’s a wrap! ASUS really outdid themselves this time and has transformed the Zenfone 5 into something extraordinary. There may actually be some truth to their claim that their new device is an “Intelligent Phone”. Either way, this is exciting times as we are finally seeing a strong AI presence in smartphones.
