Cherry Mobile’s Trident plagued with problems

(Updated with Cherry Mobile’s response) Just barely 2 weeks from the release of Cherry Mobile’s Trident Q300, reports of numerous problems has started to spread in forums.

In a thread in TipidPC, early adopters of the Cherry Mobile Trident shared their frustrations and problems with the triple-SIM phone.

Issues range from incompatible SIM cards, non-functioning WiFi, to locked phonebook and messages folder.

Sabi sa akin ng store clerk S.O.P. raw nila to test each unit before they release it. BUTI na lang kamo tinest muna namin. Eto ang na-experience ko. Right out of the box, sinalpakan nya ng 3 SIM (SMART sa 1st, PLDT sa 2nd and Globe sa 3rd). May lumalabas na “SIM not ready” prompt. Sa calls, ganun din. Di ako makatawag using SIM slot 3 with the Globe. It turns out pala na bukod sa may problema ang 32K SIMs dito sa phone na ito, pati yung 128K SIMs, sablay din! Grabe! I asked her why. She told me “Sir, minsan kasi pag start nya, nag-hahang sya after nung animated logo”. – rdeveyra

Message me if anyone is interested to buy my bnew q3. Benta ko nalang ng mas mura. Thanks. — rstaana

This time around, I don’t think a bumper case will solve the problems. *jk*

It’s possible the issue could be caused by an unstable software. Hopefully, an update would fix most of those bugs in the phone.

See more of the discussion about the phone here.

Update: The Product Manager of Cherry Mobile just called me to clarify the issue. Apparently, they only recently discovered that the 3rd SIM slot would not accept any SIM that is larger than 32K (i.e. 64k and 128k) which happens with Globe SIMs.

They already have a software fix for this and advised everyone who bought the Trident to visit the Cherry Mobile service centers to have their units updated with the software fix/update. They’ll also send me a review unit this week so I can personally check the phone.

I would like to start doing some creative writing but I don’t know where to start, as in, what do I write about, and whether it’s actually worth bothering with or not. I’d probably be more inclined to do it if there was a competition or group I could join online or something like that. . . Does anyone do any writing or their own, if so, how did you get started? And what have you gotten out of it?.

I bought my q300 last Dec 2010. Problems I have experienced are: 3rd sim is not working perfectly, you should reset the phone to receive new sms from 3rd sim. Touchpad response is slow. Now, a big problem of mine was I can’t scroll up and down, co’z the touchpad scroll up and down is not working anymore.

6. kryz says:

is there an update to this? is the unit a better phone now? ;)

7. tbbag says:

I’ve read the thread of comments for this review. I’ve used the Trident for more than a year now and have used it to make calls, surf with wifi and watch TV regularly with all the 3 sims working (really ok for texting) all over the country. The battery life is ok, lasting 2-3 days with moderate use (i.e. mostly texting). Sometimes I charge after 4-5 days in order to drain the batteries. The use of SIM 3 to make a call sometimes results in a hanged phone but reliably good enough for texting (either with Smart or Sun on SIM 3). I’m pleasantly satisfied with it. I bought a new smartphone (of a well-known brand of cellphones) early this year but I just prefer to use this triple sim wonder (no more 2nd or 3rd phone). I’ve dropped it more than I can remember and still holds up well. Apparently no damage and in good working condition. This is no put on. I’m lucky I got a good quality unit when I bought it in a kiosk in a mall. If luck holds out, I think I’ll be using this for 1-2 more years and might still be able to give it to someone else who might like it – in good working condition.

SEVERAL MONTHS AGO WHEN CHERRY MOBILE AND TORQUE LAUNCHED THEIR 3 SIM PHONES, I WAS IN A DILEMMA WHICH TO BUY. BOTH WERE PACKAGED SUPERBLY BUT BOTH WERE ALSO CRITICIZED. AFTER A LONG BALANCING ACT I BOUGHT TORQUE TRINITY… I HAD NO CHOICE DAHIL NOT A SINGLE TRIDENT IS AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET. DAHIL SIGURO PINULL OUT NA LAHAT BECAUSE OF THE MANY CLAMORS. SO I’VE BEEN USING THE TORQUE 7 MONTHS NOW.. I FELT LIBERATED FROM MAINTAINING 3 CELL PHONES.. SO CONVENIENT.. PERO MAY MGA IMPERFECTIONS DIN THAT ARE BOTHERSOME.. NUNG MAGTANONG AKO SA MGA TORQUE DISTRIBUTORS IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE NOT PRODUCING THAT UNIT ANYMORE TOO.. BAKA NGA HINDI MA PERFECT… HERE ARE THE IMPERFECTIONS THAT I EXPERIENCE SA TORQUE TRINITY: WHEN WRITING A TELEPHONE NUMBER I CANNOT TYPE THE + SIGN…. WHEN REPLYING A TEXT MESSAGE, THE REPLY IS NOT SAVED… THE WI-FI IS NOT THAT USEFUL.. ANG HIRAP INAVIGATE. THE BATTERY LIFE IS GETTING SHORTER EACH DAY.. BUT I WAS TOLD KASI DAW 3 NETWORKS ANG PINAPTAKBO.. THOSE ABOVE MENTIONED ARE MANAGEABLE… HETO ANG TERRIBLE NA I HOPE TORQUE COMPANY CAN CORRECT: YUNG 3RD SIM. PAG MAY TUMAWAG, NARIRINIG NG CALLER NA NAGRI RING.. BUT THE CALL IS NOT DETECTED BY THE PHONE. TEXT MESSAGES ARE NOT PERCEIVED EITHER… MALALAMAN MO NA LANG NA MAY MGA MESSAGES KA (FROM THE PREVIOUS DAY PA) ONLY WHEN YOU RESET YOUR PHONE… LIKE WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR BATTERY.. SO PAG NA TURN OFF AND THEN TURNED ON AGAIN YOUR ONE DAU OLD MESSAGE SA 3RD SIM WILL CASCADE. I HOPE THE TORQUE COMPANY CAN READ THIS MESSAGE.. SANA THEY CAN CORRECT THOSE HOLES.. KUNG MAY MALASAKIT MAN SILA SA MGA CONSUMERS NA MAHIHIRAP.. I HOPE TOO THEY CAN CONTACT ME.. I AM WILLING TO COOPERATE IF THEY NEED TO INVESTIGATE THE MATTERS. EMAIL ME AT whirlpoolhear****@****.***

My Cherry phone Q300,that I bought from Beirlin Electronics at SM Baguio City on Dec. 25, 2010 as a gift to myself, which I discovered later to have so many defects, finally laid to rest on April 23, 2011. Patay na talaga at wala ng power. I brought the phone to QSL, Dagupan City where their Service Center is located but the clerk there told me to pay P500.00 before they will check the phone. I told the sales clerk that the phone is still under warranty and I am not suppose to pay even a single centavo. Then the sales clerk left did not entertain me anymore. On May 10, 2011, I brought back the phone to Berlein Electronics, SM Baguio City to have it check. But the sales clerk there advised me instead to bring the phone to their main service center in Manila. Imagine the sacrifices that I got in buying this Cherry phone? I am residing in Pangasinan so I have to travel to Manila with a lot of money to spend just to have this problem phone repaired not to mention the tiresome efforts that I have to encounter in traveling from Pangasinan to Manila and without further mentioning my efforts in going to Baguio City earlier. I am now repenting why I happened to buy this kind of phone. But I have to go to Manila to have it repaired simply because SAYANG DIN ANG PERANG PINAMBILI KO, even if I know that by going to Manila I have to spend more than ONE THOUSAND PESOS again for transportation and meals plus time and efforts.

I love my Q300 phone.. As of now it work so well on me.. i use globe, smart, sun… the only problem i see is the battery life.. I need to charge it everyday.. maybe because i have lots of text and call… but still they issue two battery phone..

17. Trident says:

Well,i have this opinion
Type ko tong phone na ito.it’s because of it’s tv function,it’s wifi connectivity,it’s trackpad navigation and it’s price tag.
i will not buy this because of it’s 3ple sim function.i don’t need that.and one more thing.i will buy this because of it’s camera(with flash) and it’s stylish.so/still gonna buy it :)

18. Angelo says:

19. Rodolfo Concepcion says:

I FORGOT TO ADD NA PAG MAGPALOAD KA AT MAGVERIFY NG LOAD BALANCE SA TALK N TEXT, BUKOD SA ASIAN CHARACTERS ANG LUMALABAS NA INSTRUCTIONS SA LCD, YOU CAN NOTICE NA ANG DATE AT ORAS AY DI TUGMA SA KASALUKUYANG PERIOD. ANG DATE AY YEAR 2001 PA. YAN ANG MGA VERY GLARING NA DEFECTS NG CHERRY MOBILE PHONE Q300 TRIDENT. MARAMI PANG DEFECTS NA MAHIRAP I-DESCRIBE.

20. Rodolfo Concepcion says:

I bought a Cherry mobile phone, TRIDENT Q300 with 3 sims in Baguio City on Dec. 25. I’m so happy to have it coz bukod sa mura na, 3 pa ang sim. However I discovered an unusual performance of the said phone. The 3rd sim is not working well. I tried to fix it by goimng to the setting’s language but there are only two laguages to select, English and Chinese. If you select english, ganun din ibang language din ang lumalabas. Kaya there is no way to change the laguage from foreign language to English.

21. Reyhan Cayabyab says:

It’s a practical phone if you’re using 3 sim cards. I’m using:
1. Sun
2. Globe
3. PLDT LL

I’m not sure if it’s built like this or if it’s malfunctioning, I got this late December 2010:
1. Sometimes pressing and holding the unlock key won’t unlock, so you gotta do that a lot.
2. Sim3 doesn’t have call settings unlike sim1 and sim2, so whatever sim you’re using in sim3, you CANT toggle:
– call waiting
– call divert
– call barring

Other issues with sim slot 3:
1. You can’t use phone memory for storing messages received from sim slot 3, so if your sim has a maximum capacity of 25 messages, you gotta keep deleting after receiving 25 messages. Sim 1 and 2 each is given a 1000 message capacity.
2. I tried putting in PLDT LL in sim slot 3, and instead of registering as pldt ll+, it registers as smart, okay that’s fine I guess but when people try calling that pldt ll number, I don’t get a ring, I’m not notified. I wouldn’t know who’s calling and when the call happened until they call me on my other numbers. Outgoing calls still work. If you put the pldt ll on sim slot 1 or sim slot 2, it does ring and it does register as pldt ll+. I could do it that way but I get a lot of messages on my other sims (globe and sun) and so i have to start deleting messages after the 25th message if placed in sim slot 3.
3. Changing Touch-pad sensitivity settings doesnt make a difference with sensitivity, sometimes itll respond to finger movement, sometimes it wont, so i use the volume keys which also act as an up or down button on some menus.
4. If you plug in earphones without a built-in Mic and you get a ring from someone and answer it, call would end and the person calling you would think you’re rejecting the call. im guessing the phone is looking for a built-in mic on that earphone and when it detects no mic, it drops the call. Why am i using earphones not included in the box? well because the earphones I use are better in terms of sound quality, I use it for the mp3s I put into the phone.
5. Pressing sim 2 button goes to the main menu. There is already a button for that, so there are 2 buttons going to the main menu while sim 1 and sim 3 button goes to their call history.
6. Browsing capabilities are very limited, but hey least you get to use WiFi right?
7. I’ve had issues wherein I have to press hands-free twice just activate that feature.
8. Battery doesn’t last too long. Probably why they include an extra battery in the box.

What I like about the phone:
1. 3 sim cards obviously.
2. It’s cheap. Even though it feels like it can break any minute, it’s still cheap.
3. You can use regular earphones for this.
4. 8GB support, good for mp3s.
5. Has a built in TV tuner. I never get good reception, so i really dont use it.
6. Has a button on the side that activates a voice recorder, so if you need that feature quickly, its just 1 press away. I’ve used it many times.
7. qwerty keypad.
8. dual camera with mini lighting. I’ve used it once, for testing.

22. Lyla Dee Asperin says:

So ano ba talaga? Bibili ba ako ng Cherry Mobile Trident Q300? Eh yung MyPhone QW28 Duo eh Wifi nga pero wala namang TV at hindi triple sim.

Please advice.

23. don says:

ok naman siya what i like and use is the 3 sims function beside all of the nega issues lets take into consideration its a filipino brand lets support it na lang though ur critiscm will help the company grow..

24. Angelo says:

Globe-Smart-Sun User,

25. Jake says:

I was in a dilemma between Samsung Punch (or Wave) and Cherry Mobile Trident Q300..the latter’s features are really very tempting (WIFI, Triple SIM, etc) but what’s holding me back was the fact that Cherry = China = Poor Quality/Service.

I dropped by their booth here in SM MOA to check it out. I asked one of the sales personnel if they have a demo unit (for me to check the features and for me to decide). She said they don’t have a demo unit and that they dont allow any unit to be tested unless it is bought, meaning they will demo it to you upon purchase..so i thought that would be useless because ive already bought the unit..! Besides, that’s against the law (Consumer Act of the Philippines..)

Good thing i read all the reviews re: Cherry Mobile (in general). Bad Quality, Bad Before & After Sales Service..go figure..

26. Globe-Smart-Sun User says:

@ angelo
try to use the java-opera mini browser. im using the wifi now on my trident.

27. silverback says:

bought my trident a month ago here in bacolod for 5,700. (i learned it now goes for 4,995.) it works as advertised. camera’s a bit fuzzy, music player’s tinny as one would expect, but the video player’s good. and you can fine tune the friction setting on your trackpad. only problems encountered so far — no menu for sim 3, and difficulty in setting up caller groups (you can’t search for names when adding, you have to scroll through the entire phonebook, to add names one at a time).wifi’s ok too. pretty good phone.

28. khaye says:

32. Rem says:

MyPhone, Cherry Mobile and Torque are all China Phones. (Not to be mistaken as China Made like Nokia/Sony Ericsson) So please don’t expect too much from it. Yes they’re cheap, but how about reliablity and safety issues? Bago pa lang sila sa market, unlike the experts (Nokia/Siemens/Erickson).

@Angie, bakit mo naman naasabing pati Apple natatalo?

33. Paolo says:

Does anybody know any information regarding sa SAR level ng units ng Cherry Mobile?. I am tempted to purchase one since it’s very affordable. Thanks

YUN LANG ANG UNANG CONCERN KO.. NOW AFTER READING THE COMMENTS ABOVE, LALO AKONG NAG HESITATE BECAUSE SOFTWARE AND PHYSICAL MATTERS NA ANG PINAG UUSAPAN. may kasama naman sya extra battery kaya if you sum it up e di 4 hours na din . . . . . i mean 4 days

44. Globe-Smart-Sun User says:

ok na sakin to as long as walang, maging problema trident ko. hopefully tumagal sya kahit 2 years man lang.

i own a torque triple sim fone.. the trinity as they call it. i like it. it works perfectly well.. even the wifi works as i want it. the tv is clear and so is the audio. i never regret getting myself one.!

47. pinescruiser says:

sayang i’m planning to buy one pa naman..

compared to cherry tri sim, mas ok kaya yung torque na try sim??

watch mode muna ako..

48. Rem says:

I was actually surprised that even these China Phones have *software updates*! Nakakatakot pa bumili kasi madaming sims, baka mas mataas yung SAR levels na nag ccause ng cancer. :( Kelan kaya sila magkakaroon ng 3G dual sim like Verzio’s. Tska pare pareho lang sila ng Apple, nagongopya ng technologies from other inventors like Nokia.

49. rommel says:

I ended up buying Samsung Wave and i’m loving it hehe..

50. Joshua Oliveros says:

Hi,

Do you already have the review unit of the phone? How was it? Are the problems fixed already?

51. Will says:

I previously had a cherry m35, it had a steel casing. after a few months spots showed up on the casing. when i brought it to the store they sent the unit to the supplier. The phone is still under warranty and then the supplier(official cherry mobile) told them and me that it is not under warranty because the defect is cosmetic? What? There was very few scratches all around the cellphone. the spots were defects and they tell me it its my fault? they had me pay to change the casing. i had to because it looked so dirty and the spots gut rusty. but now i don’t use it anymore i am going to sell it cheap and i do not recommend cherry anymore to my friends. I tell them it is a piece of trash and the warranty is not worth it.
Another problem? the battery got drained quickly after just a few months. The phone resets after calls. JUST DON’T BUY THIS TRASH!

52. Pipo says:

@Manong that was witty! hahahaha. i love reading comments.

53. Chito F. says:

I couldn’t agree more. Arvee’s right, CSRs are not to blame. They just pass on to their customers what infos are on hand and they pass on to the management what the customer can say about the product. Being a CSR, yes we’re biased. We support our company’s products/services and even recommend them to others but if something is wrong, we humbly excuse the product from other customers.

You get what you pay for? Maybe, but not all the time. let’s take the iphone 4’s problem for example. the fault is on its hardware. with any company’s policy, if it’s on the hardware, it should be serviced or replaced as long as it is within the warranty period. some customers have gone through the so-called silent recall. but customers who go right in front of a apple store were sent back home with no solution on hand. to be fair with cherry mobile, they allowed their customers to return the product and made them chose if they would want to replace it with another unit or promptly return their payment. at least, that’s what i have read on the tipidcp topic. while apple, chose the cheap way of treating their customers. a case.

-disclaimer: I’m a CSR of a telecommunications company, not of any phone manufacturer.

54. nexusboy says:

as what they say: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

55. keibiem5 says:

56. Arvee says:

+1 for Jhay. Although for any development process, there’s what we call prototyping. If ever prototype1 presented bugs/problems, the company should be able to come up with prototype2, 3, 4… That’s how they would prevent birth defects/pains.

Cases like iPhone 4’s antenna gate problem, Cherry Trident’s tri-sim bug and many others, is because of the development team’s lack of *exploration* on the prototypes (if they even produced prototypes).

We’re not sure how the whole development process is happening on Nokia, RIM, Apple or even small time players like Cherry, myPhone, etc. But small or big, it’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure they produce quality products.

-100 for Les Paul
Do you even know that CSR means Customer Service Representative? And oh, spare me from your thoughts na baka CSR ako.

Mga tipo mo yung taong MEMA. Me Masabi at Me Mapagbintangan lang. Bawasan mo yan, wala kang patutunguhan sa buhay niyan.

57. manong says:

last time apple.. next is cherry.. naku humanda kayong mga blackberry users!

58. Kinny says:

So much for comments saying “Take that, other fruit phone! Cherry Rules!’ Appearance may rule and tri sim concept but if it’s so buggy forget it!

59. assk me how says:

actually, all phones has its own issues… expensive unit or not… remember nokia music edition (touch screen) kaya nga meron tayong tinatawag na “reviews” gaya ng yugatech

tama si Jhay… birth pains talaga but gladly cherry mobile solved this issue as early as possible.

i speak in my own opinion and not connected with any manufacturer and supplier.

60. Jhay says:

Birth pains I guess. It’s a good thing Cherry Mobile was quick to respond with a fix.

61. Angie says:

@Magnum

Well, okay, you can find me on Facebook but I won’t let you find me by giving it out myself. Duh?

So for you guys out there who’s planning to buy something similar to this, reminder lang, you’ll get what you pay for. Walang sisihan! :) May mga magsasabi na “Sus, brand name lang naman binabayaran mo for that phone” but nothing beats a reputable company’s quality and after sales service on their products.

Well yeah, aside from Apple, of course hahaha jk

62. MobilePinas says:

Buti na lang na-open mo issue na, kasi I’m also planning to buy this phone. Anyway, hope they would fix this problem.

63. marco says:

hahaha.,, guys.. its just a price-quality relationship.

the cheaper the device, the more it is prone to problems..

instead of cherry.. why not go with MYPHONE.

I bought one and kahit ilang beses ko na xa mahulog eh everything is still working well..

i also have a SAMSUNG I8910 HD.. 10X ko na xa nahuhulog and to the point na makalas pati battery but up to now eh working well and good as it was when i first bought mine..

64. dongv says:

hehe! Cherry….LEMONS….pati Appple na rin now.

may be not a bumper can solve the problem, it can be solve by replacing with 3 separated units.

65. Jay says:

“….they only recently discovered that the 3rd SIM slot would not accept any SIM that is larger than 32K (i.e. 64k and 128k) which happens with Globe SIMs.”

~and that would be stupid.

66. Ton says:

@ mr. bogus

Sir, wala nang mas titibay pa sa 3210 :) with the possible exception of the original 6110 (chameleon!)

67. pvegetahSticky says:

@abeolandres: meron palang problem yung cellphone na Cherry Mobile Trident. Interested pa naman ako bumili nun.. Thanks for posting this..

68. mr. bogus says:

gaya ng red fox, torque, cherry and myphone!!!!!!!!!!

69. Magnum says:

@Angie

If you’re brave enough, why don’t you post your facebook URL so we can do away with the guessing games?

70. Unknown Soldier says:

My brother bought Q300 also and luckily, he didn’t have any problems… now my brother enjoys using his phone with TV, WiFi and Triple Active SIM working =)

the good side:
* The phone is light (i thought its heavy because the size looks like Nokia E72)
* You can surf the net using the default browser or Opera.
* It has google maps and other java applications
* The keys are responsive
* Aside from TV viewing, you can also record your favorite local channels and FM stations (quality depends on signal)
* Its CHEAP!
* Battery last long also… good for 3 days
* Audio jack is generic… (not sure yet)

the bad side:
* with bluetooth, wifi, and 3 active sim signals… im afraid that your balls will gonna be fried! hahaha!
* medyo nakakapanibago yung touch key navigation but you’ll get use to it…
* you get what you pay for… camera is lame maski may flash… so don’t expect to much!

in the end… if you love this phone… then buy it… if not… then buy it! coz with 3 sim active, wifi, tv, player… it’s definitely a bargain! I’m planning to buy one =)

71. Angie says:

@Les Paul
Okay? haha! what’s your proof na employee ako ng Cherry Mobile? I haven’t even tried any of Cherry’s phone.

You’re just one bitter buyer. Don’t blame me for your “oh, i just spent 6.5 grans for that crap” feeling. It’s your fault! What I posted here is already posted at TipidCP. Go see for yourself. Talak ka ng talak.

72. Les Paul says:

@Angie,

I think you’re just a CSR of that blistered company. Cherry Mobile sucks big time, so don’t try to put some sophism in your comment, you tool.

74. Angie says:

I think you’re talking about the topic on TipidCP.

Anyway based on what I have read, flawless naman yung operation ng Trident, Q3, etc. with regards to other features (Wi-Fi, TV, FM, Music Player, Trackpad, etc.).

Ang problem, nasa main feature ng phone. Yung main feature pa. So lumelevel up na ang Cherry Mobile, pati Apple tinatalo.

75. JP says:

I couldn’t be more anticipative of this

76. mike says:

the QA testing only defaults to 2 sims, not 3 sims. that’s why they missed out the 3rd sim.

and why the wifi do not work? The customer paid for it.

77. milagros solidarios says:

cherry mobile are bastard pieces of shit! the company, the phones they sell and the people who work for them! they should all burn in hell!

78. lolipown says:

Wow.. that’s really showing of Cherry’s Q.A. procedure.

79. Rabby says:

triple the sim, triple the problem :D

80. tipler says:

early adopters

81. Alex says:

I just bought my Cherry Mobile Trident Q300 yesterday. I never experience any problem with my Trident up to this time. All features specified are working fine. Before I bought the phone, I really asked the sales clerk to test it first. Luckily I never encountered the problems of other buyers. Or maybe I got an updated unit since it was delivered only last saturday night. Probably all those problems of early buyers were already fixed with my unit.

82. bj says:

Namamahalan pa rin kasi ako kahit pa trisim at “loaded” with features tong phone na to. Cherry Mobile F10 is cheap and feels cheap but I am a cheapskate.LOL All I need from a phone is its call/text/radio capabilities with long battery life. Has to be a dual sim though.

It serves its purpose for me and at a reasonable price.^_^

83. Jon says:

Wow. Epic fail on their part. Haha, sir abe, fails just like Apple. I was about to say that they should have tested that, because that is typically the first thing an end user would try.

I just hope that software fix will not just make those bars bigger. *wink wink*

84. cutemoboy says:

85. DonnieCons says:

@abeolandres I wonder if you have already tested iPhone 4. What is your reaction to the antenna issues? Are these good reasons to defer?

86. limuelG says:

as i expected,dami problema!!1
