We have Android 5.1 Lollipop present on the device, but it is skinned with Amigo 3.1. The Amigo UI of Gionee is similar to the likes to Xiaomi’s MIUI and Huawei’s EMUI wherein the usual app drawer found on other Android handsets is omitted. Everything is polished to the liking of the manufacturer which gives Gionee smartphones a distinct user experience.
Aside from that, one of the major differences of Amigo is how it handles notifications and quick settings. The notification drop-down list segregates important notifications from other notifications like app notifications, game alerts, and more. For you to access the quick settings and shortcuts, you’ll have swipe up from the bottom just like with iOS. Interestingly, there’s a “fake call” feature available for times you need a way out of some awkward scenarios.
Amigo is well-designed and runs skin deep. Its set of icons are not the prettiest around, but thanks to the simplicity and joyfulness of the palette of the UI, the overall appeal of Amigo is pleasing. There’s a theme store for more customization options, and a wide range of downloadable theme designs.
Gionee has put in a 13-megapixel shooter for the rear and a 5-megapixel on the front. These are popular numbers in this range, but the performance of the cameras does not speak with megapixel count but rather on image quality.
For the primary 13MP camera, in broad daylight, you’ll get good results with a decent amount of details. Sharpening can be a bit harsh, but distant texts are readable when reviewing. Indoor performance is a different story as the S Plus struggles with a slow shutter to compensate for the dim scenarios.
This results to a bit murky stills and the camera is not recommend for fast moving subjects. There’s an LED flash to help when needed. The front camera, despite being a 5-megapixel sensor, is not as good as we hoped it to be but is still good for video chatting and selfies since it’s got a wide field of view.

When played back on the device, colors are vibrant thanks to the AMOLED panel. The default setting is at 720p, so be sure to change it in the setting panels to get better quality. There’s a nifty electronic stabilization feature that works good but crops the image a bit. Here’s a sample:
Inside the S Plus is a MediaTek MT6753 chipset with an octa-core processor running at 1.3GHz. It also has a generous 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot for expansion. With this setup, you already have a handset capable of surviving most tasks thrown on a modern smartphone. The Mali-T720MP3 GPU is also a decent performer when it comes to gaming.
Everyday apps like messaging, Facebook, UC Browser, and more were able to run smoothly without annoying hiccups. We’ve noticed that the UI framerate when navigating through Amigo is pretty smooth and seems to consistently reach the 60fps mark. Basically, for most, the Amigo UI is a great skin compared to others which slow down the device over time.
Here are the benchmark scores of the S Plus:
