Hands-on: Huawei Mate 9, Mate 9 Pro and Porsche Design

All three models of the Huawei Mate 9 are all here at the floor in CES 2017. While the Mate 9 certainly looks just like its predecessor (Mate 8 review here), the Mate 9 Pro and Mate 9 Porsche Design definitely got our attention.

The Mate 9 and it’s large 5.9-inch display has an almost similar design and build as the Mate 8 with the fingerprint sensor placed at the back for better usability.

The Mate 9 Pro is actually different (and we don’t really get why they had to call it the Pro version) since it has a smaller display size of only 5.5 inches but with higher quad HD resolution. The glass display also curves on both edges (2.5D) much like the Galaxy S7 Edge. In fact, the Mate 9 Pro certainly looks like the S7 Edge since the oblong-shaped home button and fingerprint sensor is at the front (and not at the back unlike the Mate 9).

The Mate 9 Porsche Design has the same form factor and design as the Mate 9 Pro with the slight cosmetic changes to accommodate the Porsche Design markings. Besides that, the RAM and storage on the Porsche Design were also maxed out at 6GB/256GB.

The entire Mate 9 line-up has been equipped with a 2nd-generation dual-camera with Leica optics. The main RGB sensors is 12MP but the monochrome sensor is bigger at 20MP. The placement of the flash and laser autofocus has been repositioned to the sides of the rear camera on the Mate 9 but were moved to the top and bottom on the Mate 9 Pro/Porsche Design.

Check out our short video hands-on below:

Suffice it to say, in the short time that we handled the Mate 9 Pro, we’re really liking the solid build and design.
