Honor has recently announced that it is committing to seven years of OS and security patches for its flagship phones. This move positions the company alongside Samsung and Google, the only other companies offering such long-term software support.
The extended update policy will first apply to the HONOR Magic7 Pro. However, another source claims that all recent HONOR Magic devices will get the new update policy, starting in EU.
In Europe, Honor’s seven-year pledge goes beyond the new EU Ecodesign Directive, which requires phone makers to provide at least five years of OS updates.
Fei Fang, Honor’s president of products, explained that this push reflects consumer demand for phones that are not only powerful but also reliable and long-lasting.
Fang acknowledged the challenges in guaranteeing seven years of updates, particularly with older hardware that may struggle to support new features. The company, however, has been working closely with chip manufacturers and partners like Google to ensure smoother long-term support.
As AI features continue to evolve on smartphones, Fang doesn’t see them as a barrier to extended updates. She explained that most AI updates are app-based, not tied to the OS itself, meaning they won’t interfere with the update schedule.
Notably, the move comes part of Honor’s ‘Alpha Plan’—that the company announced at MWC 2025. The so-called Alpha Plan also included the AI Deepfake detection and a new file-sharing protocol for Android and iOS devices.
