Here are the advantages of each device:

HTC U12+

  • Better display resolution
  • Better performing chipset in terms of raw power
  • Expandable Storage
  • Dual front camera setup
  • 4×4 MIMO
  • HTC Edge Sense 2
  • Better Bluetooth
  • IP68 water and dust resistance rating

Huawei P20 Pro

  • Slightly bigger display
  • Better performing chipset in terms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tasks
  • Triple rear camera setup
  • Higher front camera resolution
  • Bigger battery capacity

Display-wise the HTC U12+ takes the lead, with its higher QHD+ resolution and good screen real estate. Although the Huawei P20 Pro does have a slightly bigger display. It won’t be that noticeable but on paper it has more screen real estate.

Performance-wise, we are once again back to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 vs HiSilicon Kirin 970 stand-off. For raw CPU and GPU performance, the Snapdragon 845 wins but for AI tasks and handling, the Kirin 970 is the better choice. So, it will all boil down to raw performance or smarter task handling.

We haven’t had the chance to test the HTC U12+’ camera performance yet but according to the folks over at DxOMark, it’s quite impressive. Garnering a score of 103, it’s one of the few to ever enter such territory. It even beat the P20 Pro’s sibling, the P20, by one point. While an impressive feat, it’s still quite some points away from the P20 Pro’s 109 rating as Huawei’s flagship remains the king of smartphone photography. (Sample shots of the P20 Pro here)

Either way, both devices have different setups. The P20 Pro has more emphasis on rear photography with its triple rear cameras, though its front shooter still has a respectable resolution. The HTC U12+, on the other hand, bet it all on the company’s UltraPixel technology, focusing on creating a just single powerful rear camera accompanied by a secondary Telephoto lens. The front features a dual setup. We’ll be sure to test out HTC’s offering once we get a hand on a unit.

As for other features, the HTC U12+ edges out the P20 Pro in terms of water and dust resistance with a higher IP68 rating. It also has better Bluetooth, expandable storage, and 4×4 MIMO. Not to mention, we have HTC’s Edge Sense 2 technology, which was specifically updated for the U12+. We had a lot of fun with the first iteration on the U11 and are excited to try and check what new features HTC has incorporated on the new version.

Battery-wise, on paper, the Huawei P20 Pro takes the money with it’s higher 4,000mAh capacity. Then again, capacity isn’t the only factor in determining battery life. We’ll be sure to test out the HTC U12+’ battery performance when we get the chance.

The Huawei P20 Pro is currently priced at Php 44,990 while HTC Philippines has yet to reveal the pricing for the U12+. Although in the US it is priced at $799 (~Php 42,039) for the 64GB variant and $899 (~Php 47,300) for the 128GB.

There you have it! It’s a tight battle between two flagships. Where’s your money at? Let us know in the comments section below.
