Huawei executive: More than 4GB RAM not needed in a phone

After the number of cores powering a handset, one of the most bragged specification is the memory. Vivo introduced us the world’s first 6GB RAM phone last year and the trend trickles down to other manufacturers like with the OnePlus 3. But, an official from Huawei sees otherwise.

Huawei executive Lao Shi recently noted on his Weibo page that 4GB of RAM is enough on a phone for it to run smoothly. He also added that a lot of Huawei phones are better off with 4GB RAM than having more.

To prove his statement, Mr. Lao points to the iPhone. He says that the iPhone works smoothly with lower RAM than any Android handset and that’s due to optimization with iOS. The executive also says that putting in more RAM on a smartphone does nothing but jacks up the handset’s price.

We’ve got to admit, our smartphones already have the same RAM, or even more, than our work laptop. But then, optimization of Android will take a lot of effort from Google and partner OEMs. The customization done by manufacturers greatly help add features to the OS but sometimes unnecessary too.

Perhaps someday in the future, our phones will need a lot of RAM. Like with Zenfone AR with its 8GB RAM due to the augmented reality (AR) feature of the handset. For now, let’s stick to the core features and fair pricing.

  1. If you have a performance problem, it’s easier and cheaper (for the manufacturer/provider) to throw hardware at the problem than to fix and optimise the system.

    • System Optimization > Hardware optimization.
