Huawei nova Y70 Hands-on

Early this month, Huawei released in the Philippines the Huawei nova Y70 which features a 6.75-inch screen, triple rear cameras, and is powered by a large 6,000mAh battery. For under PHP 10K, this looks like a solid daily driver for light users who want a device with a large screen and a long battery life. Read our initial thoughts below.

One of the first things you’ll notice about the nova Y70 is its size, which can be attributed to the large 6.75-inch screen. The resolution is just HD+ (1600 x 720) or equal to 260ppi, which is not much but it still looks good as the screen is clear with good viewing angles and accurate colors.

It has thin bezels with a dew drop notch at the top for the 8MP selfie camera. Placed above it in the bezel is the earpiece.

To the left, we have the card tray that can accept two nano-sized SIM cards and a microSD card in a hybrid setup.

On the right, we have the volume buttons and the power/lock key that also doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

Up top, we have the secondary microphone.

Down at the bottom are the 3.5mm audio jack, main microphone, USB-C port, and loudspeaker.

At the back, we have the large protruding camera module that houses the 48MP main, 5MP ultra-wide, and 2MP depth.

When it comes to its design, the nova Y70 looks like your typical smartphone but it doesn’t mean that it looks boring. The frame has a metallic paint job while the back panel has a glossy finish. It looks premium but is a fingerprint and smudge magnet.

In the hands, the nova Y70 feels tall, chunky, and hefty. It measures 9 mm thick and weighs 199 g, which is understandable given the large battery. Still, you won’t have problems holding it and the buttons are easily reachable. It’s going to add more chunk to it though once you use the protective case.

Powering the Huawei nova Y70 is an old Kirin 710 chipset with an octa-core CPU and Mali-G51 GPU. For the memory, it has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Software-wise, it runs on EMUI 12 with HMS. Running AnTuTu v9, we got a score of 195,216.

Given the specs and initial performance check, the nova Y70 can be considered an entry-level device, but the large screen, triple-rear cameras, decent storage size, and huge battery make it a great candidate for light users who are looking for a solid daily driver that they can use for social media and multimedia consumption.

The Huawei nova Y70 is priced at PHP 9,999.

Its a bad sign when you launch a new phone in 2022 with a chipset launched in 2018. You get the idea.
