Motorola Defy spotted, selling for Php16,900

Motorola’s handsets are slowly making a comeback in the Philippines. I also saw the Motorola Defy (I remember one reader asking me where he could get one) yesterday and it was selling for only Php16,900.

This Android smartphone is quite old actually, being announced back in September 2010. The spces though are comparative to mid-range phones and could go head-on against the Samsung Galaxy Ace and HTC Wildfire S.

Motorola Defy specs:
800MHz Cortex-A8 processor TI OMAP3610 chipset
3.7″ display @ 480×854 pixels
Gorilla Glass display
2 GB internal storage
up to 32GB via microSD (2GB included)
512MB RAM
HSDPA 7.2Mbps, HSUPA 2Mbps
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, WiFi hotspot
Bluetooth 2.1 w/ A2DP
5MP autofocus camera with LED flash
FM radio tuner
GPS w/ aGPS
Li-Po 1540mAh battery
Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Found a unit being sold at Mega Exchange in Mall of Asia for Php16,900. It’s a little close to the price of the Galaxy SL though.

  1. I think they’ll be releasing a followup unit to this phone, the Defy+. Best to wait for that when buying such an old phone. This is the waterproof phone right?

  2. It’s good this got a Gingerbread upgrade. I wanted to get this last time :) But if there’s Defy+, then probably I’ll just have to wait again.

  3. My first phone was Motorola Modulus. I am thinking of switching back to it, to new Motorola unit like this one.

    • Ah, the modulus, I miss that one. It was also my first phone, what I liked was that in an emergency you can replace the battery with 4 AA’s. I really like the Defy, aside from it’s shockproof/dustproof/water resist features, you can root the OS and use either cyanogen or MIUI custom roms.

  4. better go for samsung i9003

  5. for real? Defy now has Gingerbread?
    ampf should’ve bought this instead

    • I was wondering the same thing. Defy with Gingerbread? I’ve had my Defy for almost 5 months and only got an upgrade to Froyo. I don’t think Motorola would put an upgraded OS to new releases of an old model and not release it to other activated units. That would just be lame on their part.

    • yeah the last time i saw motorola’s roadmap is they’re only planning froyo for the original defy…

  6. the Defy can go head on with android smartphones such as the LG optimus black P970, Samsung Galaxy SL i9003. All of them almost have the same CPU + GPU. Defy only got the underclocked version (800mhz) with some tweaking it’ll have the same CPU power. Well its up to the user preference to choose among the three

  7. Hi Abe,
this unit has been sold here in Philippines for quite some time now. My sister got her unit from Vmall greenhills (shop not tiangge) about 6months ago. 2 colors are available here. black and white color variants

  8. I believe the only official update for this one is Froyo.. but there are some unofficial Gingerbread updates all over the net though..

  9. tagal na nito sa Pilipinas ah? ilang buwan na yung defy ng gf ko.. naluluma na nga..

  10. tagal na nito sa Pilipinas ah? ilang bwan na yung sa gf ko..
