OnePlus 5: What We Know So Far

With the success of the previous OnePlus smartphones, it’s only understandable that people are stretching out their necks in anticipation for the announcement of the OnePlus 5. Like always, the smartphone is expected to have flagship specs that can keep up with today’s front-runners.

Excited for the launch of the OnePlus 5? Here’s a quick list of what to expect once it becomes official.

Design

There were early reports from Android Authority showing a supposed prototype of the OnePlus 5 and it sports a dual camera placed right smack in the middle.

It somehow resembles the general aesthetics of an HTC device with its thick antenna bands up top and at the bottom. However, it seems like OnePlus didn’t go in that direction as a newer image surfaced with a different placement for its cameras.

This one came straight from the official OnePlus Google+ page and confirms the rumors and shows its dual shooters at the top-right side of the device with the line, “Dual Camera. Clearer Photos.”

This, in addition to the curved edges, U-type antenna bands, and placement of LED flash, makes the OnePlus 5 look both like the iPhone 7 Plus and the more recent OPPO R11.

Display and Multimedia

We’ve previously reported about an online listing for the OnePlus 5 which shows the rundown of specs. The display will reportedly span 5.5 inches across and will have a Quad HD resolution or 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Additionally, OnePlus posted an unlisted video (above) showing the improvements they did with how the microphone picks up audio. In the video, they compare the OnePlus 3 against the OnePlus 5 and took a video during a loud electronic performance. It shows that the audio coming from the OnePlus 5 had clearer details and had less distortion.

Camera and Other Internals

The star of the show is inarguably the dual rear cameras that the company has confirmed for the OnePlus 5. A pair of 12-megapixel sensors should be partnered together if we’re going with the online listing, while an 8-megapixel front camera should take care of your selfies and video chats. It’s still unclear if the implementation of the second camera will either be for producing depth of field, wide-angle, zoom, or a totally different setup.

As for the processor, the company has also confirmed in a post that they will be using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset. Details also didn’t escape famous leaker @evleaks as he posted that it will run at a maximum clock speed of 2.35GHz.

Evan Blass then added that it will have an 8GB RAM which could be an additional variant to the base 6GB RAM model. Internal storage options include 64GB and 128GB.

A fingerprint scanner up front is also expected while Oxygen OS will be overlayed on top of Android Nougat. Battery capacity was reported at 3600mAh and should support Dash Charge quick charging.

Pricing and Launch

The listing from OppoMart suggests a $449PHP 26,350INR 38,053EUR 428CNY 3,268 (approx. Php23K) price tag which is actually pretty competitive and would make it a certified flagship killer. Although, there are also rumors that it might break the $500PHP 29,343INR 42,375EUR 476CNY 3,639 mark and even go up to $600PHP 35,211INR 50,850EUR 571CNY 4,367+ for the 8GB/128GB model.

OnePlus hasn’t been quiet about their launch and announced that it will be on June 20 for the global introduction. It will also arrive in India starting June 22. As for the Philippines, you can now pre-order the OnePlus 5 on Kimstore and Widget City

Conclusion

Basing on the specs alone, it seems like the company is gearing up to really put the OnePlus 5 side-by-side the flagship devices of today. It has the top of the line Snapdragon 835, a whopping 6GB – 8GB RAM, dual rear cameras, fast charging, and Android Nougat to boot.

Official teaser for the OnePlus 5

We could say that the decision-maker here would be the asking price once it gets announced. If they do keep the sub-$450 tag, they’ve got a really solid contender right here.
