5.5G: The Next Step in Connectivity

Huawei’s Sabrina Meng, Rotating Chairwoman and CFO, ushered in the 5G revolution at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2023. Embodying a rich blend of innovation and technology in her keynote, “Embracing 5G transformation”.

In a world where 5G has gained four years of commercial traction, Meng proclaimed the coming of 5.5G as the next progressive stride. She emphasized the need for intricate system engineering to match technological innovations with specific scenarios, laying the groundwork for continuous 5G success.

Meng, presenting with an aura of confidence at MWC, likened the process of predicting the future with 5G to science fiction coming to life. In the past four years, 5G has transformed numerous industries and households globally, altering our work-lifestyle patterns while propelling significant economic, industrial, and social value.

The convergence of 5G, cloud, and AI has sparked a chain reaction, with a profound effect on consumer dynamics. This fusion of technologies has empowered consumers to become potential sellers, altering the traditional buyer-seller equation.

For industries, 5G has emerged as a productivity catalyst. The shared understanding between technology providers, partners, and customers has enabled 5G to pinpoint the value sectors, gaining traction in industrial applications through strategic patience, industry-specific understanding, and constant ROI improvements.

Meng also elaborated on the transformative capabilities of 5.5G, boasting features such as 10-gigabit downlink speeds, gigabit uplink speeds, and support for a staggering 100 billion connections. With its native AI, 5.5G is not only set to enhance human connectivity but also carve unique business opportunities in IoT, sensing, and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Advancing to the next level of 5G requires more than just continuous technological progress—it needs a match between technology and real-world needs. And for this, comprehensive systems engineering is crucial. Meng urged for closer collaboration up and down the value chain – including peers, partners, customers, and developers – on solution modeling, optimization, tools, and methodologies. This approach is expected to ensure a consistent success trajectory across the entire product lifecycle.

Talking about the future of communications, Meng drew attention to the role of integrated capabilities. The first integrated capability she identified was the synergy between different technologies, which can be achieved through systematic design and cross-domain innovation. The second was the capability to integrate different approaches to management, a transformation not merely confined to technology but extending to the fundamental approach to management itself.

Meng concluded her keynote on an optimistic note, encouraging the attendees to look forward to a future crafted by information technologies like 5G, 5.5G, AI, and cloud. “The best scenery is always ahead. Let’s create a bright future together,” she said.

In related news, the three major telecommunications service providers in the Philippines have successfully launched 5G networks nationwide, enhancing network services, and paving the way for innovative technology’s potential.
