ADATA Technology has recently unveiled a groundbreaking line of cooling solutions for PCIe Gen5 solid-state drives (SSD) during the Computex 2023. The solutions are designed to address the challenge of managing the high degree of heat generated by high-performance SSDs. They enhance stability, prolong product lifespan, and maintain optimal speeds through ADATA’s award-winning heat dissipation patented designs.
The newly launched cooling solutions from ADATA include Project NeonStorm Gen5, LEGEND 970 Gen5, and SE920 USB4 external SSD. Among them, the Project NeonStorm Gen5 SSD is the first in the industry to introduce a liquid- and air-cooled heat dissipation design on an M.2 SSD. The LEGEND 970 Gen5 SSD features a dual-layer aluminum alloy heatsink and fan, with a surface crystallization coating to improve thermal conductivity. Meanwhile, the SE920 USB4 external SSD has a built-in micro fan to quickly discharge heat, activated by extending the retractable casing.

Project NeonStorm boasts transfer speeds of up to 14,000/12,000 MB per second. To keep the SSD cool, the cooling solution requires a dual-system design featuring both liquid and air cooling.
As the heat rises off the SSD, it passes through a metal heat spreader to increase contact area, and is conducted into the liquid reservoir, where heat energy is absorbed by a high thermal capacity coolant. The coolant then moves into the aluminum alloy heatsink, which acts as a medium between the coolant and the fans.
According to ADATA, the “patented dual-cooling heat dissipation” system can lower SSD temperatures by an additional 20% compared with fan-type heat dissipation fins without liquid cooling.
The LEGEND 970 SSD provides fast read/write speeds of up to 10,000/10,000MB per second., featuring a dual-layer extruded aluminum fins that create a compact air duct for directing hot and cold air.
Moreover, it has a micro fan built into the heatsink that draws in cool air and expels warm air from the sides. The SSD’s aluminum alloy fins also have a surface crystallization coating, which maximizes the efficiency of its air-cooling system for dissipating heat.
ADATA says that this “patented active heat dissipation” significantly reduces controller temperatures by 10% and guarantees long-term, high-performance operation compared to fanless heatsinks. The LEGEND 970 will begin its mass-production as early as June this year.
The SE920 external SSD features a built-in micro fan in its heat dissipation system and utilizes the latest generation USB4 transmission interface. Its extendable case strengthens convection, allowing it to effectively dissipate heat while still being lightweight and portable.
This unique “patented active cooling” design has won several design awards and reduces temperatures by 10% compared to fanless products with the same specifications.
These innovative cooling solutions represent a significant development in SSD technology. ADATA Technology’s cooling solutions are expected to transform the way we think about SSD cooling, with their structural R&D and excellent heat dissipating characteristics. These solutions will ensure that users can expect high-performance operation from their SSDs, even in the long run.
