AMD launches Ryzen 7040U processors for ultra-thin devices

Earlier this year, AMD released its new Ryzen 7000 series CPUs at CES 2023. They’re quite powerful and perfect for those building a new rig this 2023. Now, the company is expanding the lineup to produce chips for thin laptops and other ultra-thin devices. Meet the new AMD Ryzen Mobile 7040U series processors.

Unlike the standard 7000 series chipsets, the “U” in AMD Ryzen 7040U processors stand for “ultra-low power”, and they are designed mainly for thin laptops and other ultra-portable devices. AMD claims the chipset can provide high graphics quality while consuming very minimal power (15-30W). In addition, these new processors also wield Radeon graphics based on the same RDNA 3 architecture found in the latest Radeon GPUs.

AMD says the Ryzen 7040U series mobile processors, based on the new Zen 4 architecture provide “more graphics power than ever before” and even offer better output compared to its rivals, Apple and Intel. This makes it perfect for those who want to game on their thin device and are already content with integrated graphics. In addition two of the chips even support Ryzen AI.

The four new AMD processors announced are found below:

Ryzen 7 7840U: 8 cores/16 threads, 3.3GHz base clock/5.1GHz turbo; 24MB cache; 780M GPU; Ryzen AI; 15-30W TDP
Ryzen 5 7640U: 6 cores/12 threads, 3.5GHz base clock/4.9GHz turbo; 22MB cache; 760M GPU; Ryzen AI; 15-30W TDP
Ryzen 5 7540U: 6 cores/12 threads, 3.2GHz base clock/4.9GHz turbo; 22MB cache; 740M GPU; 15-30W TDP
Ryzen 3 7440U: 4 cores/8 threads, 3.0GHz base clock/4.7GHz turbo; 12MB cache; 740M GPU; 15-30W TDP

There is no word yet when we’ll see these new chips in laptops, but we hope they do soon. More importantly, we can wait to try them out and see if they can actually perform better than the competition.
