A patent from Apple suggests an iPhone redesign derived from MacBook touch bars.
The patent illustrates technology that introduces a side-mounted display for iPhones, which is reminiscent of 13-inch MacBook Pro touch bars. Although this was removed in the favor of function keys, the new design seems better for mobile use.
Unlike current smartphones with curved bezels surrounding the display, Apple is focusing on a separate screen apart from the front. The proposed side display is a narrow screen below the volume rocker and power buttons on the side of an iPhone.
How Apple intends to integrate the side-mounted display may vary from notifications, music playback, and even app launching.
In the patent’s illustration, Apple hints at the use of app icons for Messages, Calendar, and Camera demonstrating versatility.
However, patent filings are often just step one for exploring a concept prior to product development. While we’re surely in anticipation for this technology, keep in mind that patents are also filed to prevent competitors from using similar ideas.
But either way, it’s clear Apple is back in the lab exploring different designs for upcoming iPhones. Rumors have already been the pique of our interest with their foldable iPhone 11 concept.
Time can only tell what Apple has in store for us. As this is a developing story, we’ll be sure to let you guys know of further details for an iPhone redesign.
