According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), ASUS has recalled 10,000 ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero Motherboards as it is a fire and burn hazard.
Consumers that purchased flagship ASUS motherboards for the 12th Gen Intel processors before December 2021 can check if the motherboard is part of the issue by simply inputting their serial number through ASUS support. The report initially came in from a YouTuber earlier this year. ASUS has since addressed the issue on their website stating plans of issuing replacements for affected products.
ASUS Z690 Hero motherboards that were affected had serial numbers starting in MA, MB, and MC — a serial number which you can find on a label next to the 24-pin ATX power connector or the box. ASUS is still working on their recall site but it is best to check the serial numbers while the replacement program gets sorted out. Currently, the best solution is to go through customer service. According to reports, there have been 10 melted motherboards and so far no injuries but does not state where there has been any other property damage. Since boards prior to January 2022 are the ones being recalled, those sold after January 2022 are presumably fixed already.
This isn’t the first recall for computer components as NZXT has previously had to recall or refund their H1 mini-ITX cases as well as Gigabyte’s GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM power supply issues.
As of today, there have been no reports of local encounters regarding any fire or burn hazards from local consumers or suppliers.
