Car Brand Coding in EDSA and C5 proposed

MMDA is open to proposals on various policies and implementations especially when it comes to decongesting the traffic in EDSA and C5. One person has proposed that car brands should be restricted on certain days to reduce traffic.

Instead of the usual number coding scheme, Ariston Gorospe, a former consultant of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), has proposed to reduce traffic congestion in EDSA and C5 by restricting specific car brand models. Here is the schedule that he proposed:

• Monday – Toyota
• Tuesday – Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Isuzu
• Wednesday – Nissan, Ford, Foton
• Thursday – Honda, Chevrolet, Mazda, Subaru
• Friday – Suzuki, Kia, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz
• Saturday – JAC, Tata, Audi, BAIC
• Sunday – Mini and Lotus, Volvo, SsangYong, and others

Gorospe stated that he based this system on the Land Transportation Office’s list of sold vehicles in 2018. Celine Pialgo, MMDA spokesperson, has said that the agency will take a look at it but it is one of the extreme proposals that they received in a while.

“We appreciate this and what we want to get across is that our agency does not create policies on its own,”

“We accept all of them. Because with the chaotic situation that we have right now, who knows, maybe a drastic measure is what we need.”
