In a Laging Handa briefing on March 14, 2022, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevarra recommends technological solutions to help decrease energy consumption, which is cited as our “first line of defense” against rising prices around the world.
In relation to this, real estate platform Lamudi lists 23 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) development projects in the Philippines as of 2021. LEED is a sustainable building rating system that, among others, aims to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions of structures through sensor systems and targeted energy conservation strategies.
DOST also mentioned the potential of electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce fuel consumption but has lamented that the infrastructure has not yet been sufficient and has deferred to the Department of Energy (DOE) regarding rollout.
According to data from the Land Transportation Office (LTO), there are 11,950 EVs registered between 2010 and 2019, 57 percent of which are e-tricycles or e-trikes. Charging stations, however, numbered only 19. This is according to a study presented at the 2019 Toyota Hybrid Electric Technology Conference: Towards a Sustainable Mobility. Barcelona-based service provider Electromaps, meanwhile, counted just 4 charging locations in the Philippines.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) targets EV share to rise to 21 percent of all vehicles by 2030.
