We could soon see SpaceX establish itself in the Philippines even before the end of President Duterte’s term.
In a press release by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), DTI Secretary, Ramon M. Lopez said that the Philippine government is in full support of having SpaceX in the country. SpaceX would set up their internet service through their Starlink service and the use of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites. The aim of the DTI in launching the use SpaceX’s satellites is before the end of President Duterte’s term.
This was made apparent through a meeting with Secretary Lopez and Rebecca Hunter, SpaceX’s Government Affairs Senior Manager. Stated during the meeting were the reforms and measures taken to bring more foreign players and investors to the country. Another topic of discussion was the Public Service Act which helped SpaceX register its business as a 100% foreign-owned business.
The DTI and SpaceX have been working ever so closely with Ms.Hunter stating that SpaceX has already begun the process of securing permits and registering itself to be the first SpaceX branch in Southeast Asia. She also further recognized the assistance of the government in its establishment.
