President Rodrigo Duterte has recently stated that he would close down all telecommunication companies and seize its assets if services won’t improve by December 2020.
The President shed a spotlight briefly on the PLDT and Globe Telecom during his fifth State of the Nation Address, discussing the poor performance of both telcos in providing services to the Filipinos.
“If you are not ready to improve, I might just as well close all of you and we revert back to line telephone. I will expropriate that and give that to government,” President Duterte said.
Duterte advised the telcos to find ways in finding bringing in capital if the money is a problem in improving its infrastructures.
“Kung wala kayong pera umalis kayo rito. You give us half-cooked transactions, lousy service tapos ang tao nagbabayad. Tell us now if you cannot improve on it…I have 2 years, the next two years will be spent improving the telecommunications in this country without you,” Duterte said.
He also shared that he will be the one to “articulate the anger of the Filipino people” because the citizens’ patience is reaching its limit.
Globe Telecom is part of Ayala Group of Companies while PLDT Inc. is spearheaded by business tycoon Manny Pangilinan.
