Epic Games has recently announced a new app called RealityScan that enables users to scan objects in the real world or from their photos and turn them into 3D objects virtually. The idea of it is that you could actually scan your very own chair or maybe even your own pet, and bring the scan into your game or project. Which would be pretty cool.
The app is created in collaboration with Capturing Reality and is currently available in a limited beta and for those interested in giving it a try, you can do so by getting TestFlight now. While still in beta, the app is said to release on both iOS and Android by the end of the year. the app will have you take a series of photos around the object and once done, it will upload the render to Sketchfab, a 3D modeling platform for VR and AR content, after which you’ll be able to see your scan.
“RealityScan is the first step on our journey to make 3D scanning available to all creators. We believe that this tool will greatly help people of all skill sets to better understand basic scanning principles, bridging the gap between beginners and professionals. We’re excited to develop the app with feedback from the community and to introduce new features as we approach the full release.” — Michal Jancosek, co-founder Capturing Reality
RealityScan seems to be a great step in the area of 3D scanning being more readily accessible. To read all about the RealityScan app, you can visit Epic Games website to look more into it and if you’re lucky enough to be one of the 10,000 who get to try the limited beta, give it a test run,
