CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced Meta, a new company brand for Facebook apps and technologies.
The company’s name change, announced at Facebook Connect 2021 conference, reflects its growing ambitions beyond social media as it broadens its reach into areas like virtual reality (VR).
According to the company, Meta focuses on bringing the metaverse to life and helping people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. The 3D spaces in the metaverse will let users socialize, learn, collaborate and play.
“Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything that we’re doing today, let alone in the future. Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and identity on what we’re building toward,” Zuckerberg wrote in a letter.
Zuckerberg mentioned that Meta means “beyond,” and Meta is a reminder that there is always more to build for the company.
The Meta symbol forms a continuous loop that works seamlessly between 2D and 3D contexts. It can resemble an M for “Meta,” and an infinity sign, which the company identified as a symbol for infinite horizons in the metaverse.
“Our hope is that within the next decade, the metaverse will reach a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers,” he added.
Zuckerberg also mentioned in his letter to support crypto and NFT projects in the community with new forms of governance.
Note, however, that the change name applies to the parent company name, and its individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, will remain the same.
