Google Domains expected to shut down as Squarespace takes over

Squarespace has entered a definitive agreement with Google and bought Google Domains’ assets, including about 10 million domains. While details of the deal are not yet disclosed, Google has cited “efforts to sharpen our focus” as the reason for the sale. As a result, Google Domains will begin winding down its business, and it’s expected to shut down its services following the completion of the sale.

Squarespace Acquires Google Domains

Matt Madrigal, Vice President and General Manager of Google’s Merchant Shopping, stated that their top priority is ensuring a seamless transition for customers in the coming months with the assistance of the Google Domains team. Squarespace can offer an integrated experience of purchasing and managing domains, as well as providing other tools that customers may require to develop their online presence.

Squarespace has promised to maintain the renewal prices of existing Google Domains customers for at least 12 months after the deal is closed in Q3 2023. As part of the deal, customers will become Squarespace customers, and their domains will be owned and eventually managed by Squarespace after the transition period.

They will become the exclusive domains provider for any customer purchasing a domain along with their Workspace subscription from Google directly for a minimum of three years.

Squarespace will also provide billing and support services to Google Workspace customers that signed up for the service through Google Domains. Customers will continue to have the option to make changes to their domains account at any time.

JM's highest stat is probably his curious ardor to anything tech—electronics and gaming in particular. He certainly heeds utmost regard to specsheet, visuals, and rule of thirds. If creativity and wit sometimes leave JM's system, watching films, anime and a good stroll for memes are his approved therapeutic claims.
