Google just released two new badges for the extensions which can be seen on the Chrome Web Store now.
The first badge is called “Featured” that looks like a prize ribbon. This badge describes extentions that “follows recommended practices for Chrome extensions”, which means that it follows the technical best practices and that the app meets the high standards of user experience and design.
To get a Featured badge, there is a manual process to be done by Google to make sure that developers use the latest APIs and scrutinize the extension’s privacy policies and the permissions that the extension is requesting.
The second badge is called “Established Publishers” having a checkmark design. The badge is given to publishers who have already verified their identity and have shown compliance in terms of developer program policies.
Google clarified that verification of identity alone is not enough for the publisher to earn the said badge. The creator must show a “consistent positive track record” with all of their services, not violating any developer policy. In a simpler sense, the creator must prove themselves first.
Google said that it may take some months for the publisher to qualify for this badge.
A big note from Google is that companies can’t suggest their own extensions for either of the two badges but they can nominate any existing extension for the Featured badge.
With this development, the labels will surely help Chrome users feel more secure when they install extensions without any distress.
