Google rolls out RCS messaging to Android users in the US

Google has rolled out RCS messaging, the company’s successor to SMS, to all Android users in the US. The rollout was confirmed by Sanaz Ahari, Google’s senior director of product management.

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is now set to be Google’s default texting platform, integrated within the Google Messages app. Within the Messages app, RCS is referred to as “Chat” instead. Comparable to Apple’s iMessage app, Google’s RCS messaging is capable of sending high-res photos, large files, enable group chats, make video calls, supports read receipts, and has a typing indicator.

To use RCS, a user first needs to have Google Messages as their default texting app. Afterward, a user needs to update Messages and their Carrier Services, and then the user can either go the settings and switch Chat on or wait for the prompt within the app.

Currently,  RCS is only available in the US. At the moment, it is unknown if Google will roll out RCS to other territories.
