HMD Global is taking an interesting approach to kick off 2024. At MWC, the mobile maker gave us a sneak peek at some new devices they have in the works. First up is sure to be a real head-turner – a Barbie-branded flip phone is on the way with a fun throwback pink design. While details are light, it seems HMD wants to tap into the nostalgia and playful side of the iconic doll. Only time will tell if folks will really take to a Barbie phone or if it’s more of a novelty.
But HMD isn’t stopping there. They’ll also be launching the HMD Fusion smartphone in July with a clever twist – you’ll be able to swap out its rear shells to customize the look. It’s a neat idea that lets users personalize their device. The Fusion should offer folks a unique way to express themselves with their choice of accessory panels.
Additionally, HMD revealed plans to make screen repairs even simpler with an upcoming handset. It’ll be interesting to see just how user-friendly they can make the repair process.
Ravi Kunwar, Vice President – India & APAC at HMD- “We are very excited to announce the new HMD multi brand strategy which opens infinite colab possibilities. Our global association with Mattel to launch a Barbie co-branded device is a prime example. HMD will have ‘easy repairability’ and ‘sustainability’ as part of its brand promise always. We are confident about a strong smart 5G portfolio for India and other markets which we will announce very soon.“
And for those still holding out for a classic Nokia experience, HMD promises to bring back an iconic model this summer. While specifics are scarce, it’s sure to be a phone that triggers a rush of nostalgia. Only time will tell which retro gem they’ll revive.
With these diverse products, it’s clear HMD wants to appeal to different crowds in unique ways. Their multi-brand approach for 2024 shows versatility that could help them remain competitive. We’ll have to wait and see if their new offerings hit the mark once they’re unveiled.
