Huawei and Sharp sign Global Patent Partnership for 4G and 5G

In a significant move towards new collaborations in the tech realm, Huawei has officially announced the signing of a long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement with renowned Japanese electronics company Sharp. The agreement spans essential patents in cellular standards, encompassing both 4G and 5G technologies.

This cross-licensing agreement is more than a legal contract; it signifies a commitment between two industry giants to share their patented technologies, allowing each party involved to leverage the intellectual property of the other.

Mototaka Taneya, Executive Managing Officer, Chief Technical Officer, and Head of R&D at Sharp, emphasized the importance of mutual respect for intellectual property, stating, “This agreement reflects that both parties respect the high value of each intellectual property.”

Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department, expressed the company’s commitment to collaborative efforts, saying, “We’ve enjoyed working together with Japanese and global peers in developing standards and will continue to do so. Advanced technical standards enhance user experience, promote competition, and reduce device and service cost.”

This recent partnership adds to Huawei’s growing list of cross-licensing patent agreements, which includes collaborations with industry leaders such as Samsung, Nokia, Ericsson, and more.

Huawei has also resolved long-standing disputes with domestic rival Xiaomi, marking a positive turn in their relationship.

As Huawei continues to expand its collaborative network, these agreements not only contribute to technological advancements and innovation, but also set the stage for a more interconnected and innovative future in the realm of 4G and 5G technologies.
