Smartphone shipments dropped 18.3% year over year to 300 million units in Q4 of 2022, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone tracker.
This marks the largest-ever drop in a single quarter for smartphone shipments, for an overall 11.3% decline in shipments for 2022, according to the IDC in its most recent press release.
2022’s 1.21 billion smartphone units shipped is also the lowest annual shipment total since 2013.
The IDC says that the drop is due to “significantly dampened consumer demand, inflation, and economic uncertainties.”
The Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker also gathered data on the Top five companies in terms of Worldwide Smartphone Shipments for Q4 of 2022, with Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi making up the top 3.
In terms of Worldwide Smartphone Shipments for the whole calendar year of 2022, Samsung topped the list, with Apple, and Xiaomi in second and third place respectively.
In 2021, Samsung was also the top smartphone brand in terms of market share.
