iOS 18 introducing new text effects and RCS for iMessage

Apple’s iOS 18 update is working towards introducing new text effects and RCS for iMessage.

Similar to Messenger, among the new text effects is the ability to animate specific words in a message. For example, the word ‘congrats’ could come with exploding confetti whenever a user types it in.

Presently, it doesn’t seem like a pioneering change. However, it’s surely an improvement to how users interact with each other in iMessage. After all, we’re still limited to six reactions when we hold down a message from a contact.

In addition, iOS 18 sets the stage for Apple’s AI integrations for iMessage. Users will soon have the ability to generate images based on text prompts. There’s also an AI-driven auto-completion tool in the works slated to be part of the update for a better messaging experience.

Moving on, iOS 18 is also expected to introduce Rich Communication Services (RCS) support. This aims to improve compatibility between Apple and Android devices.

If this holds true, the new text effects could possibly be enjoyed in more platforms than intended. RCS offers an advanced messaging standard with a variety of features. This is inclusive of higher resolution media, audio messages, typing indicators, read receipts, Wi-Fi messaging, and enhanced group chat capabilities.

iOS 18 is set to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10th. Post-announcement, the beta version will be available to Apple Developer Program members, with a public beta likely following in July.

The complete rollout of iOS 18 is anticipated in September, bringing these exciting new features to all compatible Apple devices. With how things are shaping up, we’re in for a more dynamic, interactive, and exciting messaging platform courtesy of Apple.
