Japanese electronics company Kyocera has announced that it is officially leaving the consumer mobile phone business.
According to a report written in Japanese, Kyocera President Hideo Tanimoto said, “We can no longer find a market for the general public.”
Due to deteriorating profitability following financial difficulties that led to a JPY 2.27 billion (~PHP 923 million) loss in February 2023, the company decided to discontinue its consumer products as a solution.
The company is still producing phones, but only for enterprises. This means that users such as frontline or construction workers may still have access to the rugged devices they are accustomed to.
Kyocera had a rough competition, even in the Japanese market, against Chinese companies like Xiaomi and Oppo, as well as Japanese brands such as Sharp and Sony.
The company may be quite unfamiliar, but it was known to offer rugged smartphones for both consumer and enterprises.
The Duraforce Ultra 5G, which features a “sapphire shield” display, is one of their popular rugged smartphones that withstood the classic JerryRigEverything’s “deeper grooves at level 7”.
Looking back to 1983, they introduced the Kyotronic 85, which was claimed to be the world’s first true laptop due to its portable design.
