The Marriott International’s database has suffered a massive data breach, which compromised up to 500 million guests’ data, including their personal information.
As part of New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood’s investigation, Marriott’s Starwood Reservation Database had experienced unauthorized access dating back to 2014.
“an unauthorized party had copied and encrypted information and took steps towards removing it.”
The company found that the encrypted information belonged to the Starwood database after decrypting it. Marriott Executive Chief, Arne Sorenson, stated the following:
“We deeply regret this incident happened,”
“We fell short of what our guests deserve and what we expect of ourselves,”
It is said that the names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers, and other personal details such as credit card information may have been compromised. Marriott also stated that they will further improve their security to prevent incidents such as data breaches in the future.
“We are doing everything we can to support our guests, and using lessons learned to be better moving forward.” – Arne Sorenson
