The MediaTek Dimensity 8400 has been unveiled. It’s an upper midrange chipset with eight (8) Cortex-A725 CPU cores clocking up to 3.25 GHz.
Notably, MediaTek hasn’t given details on the clock speed per core. The highest clock speed is likely to run on one of them, not all eight. The company says that this chipset has a 41% improvement in multi-core performance compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 8300.
It features less peak power use and significant improvements in handling cache (L2, L3, and SLC). Plus, it supports up to WQHD+ screens at up to 144Hz refresh rate. The chip is also equipped to handle LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, Bluetooth 5.4, and Wi-Fi 6E.
Paired with the CPU is the ARM Mali-G720 MC7 GPU. This brings a 24% increase in peak performance and 42% less power use. Users should expect optimizations to touch latency with the upgrade.
Following the ongoing trend of AI integration, this chipset comes with the MediaTek NPU 880. It’s 20% faster in integer/floating-point operations (33% in LLM text generation). It’s also slated to offer an 18% increase in efficiency and a 21% improvement in Stable Diffusion 1.5.
The chip also has the Imagiq 1080 ISP. This supports 320-megapixel sensors, in-sensor zoom with 100% PDAF, and HDR video recording throughout the entire zoom range. The ISP even uses 12% less power to capture 4K HDR videos.
Lastly, it comes with a new 5G-A modem with up to 5.17Gbps download speeds. At the time of writing, there are two devices expected to have the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 under the hood.
The devices are the Redmi Turbo 4 and POCO X7 Pro. We’ll keep readers updated when details about these arrive, which should be very soon.
