According to the latest research reports by Counterpoint, during the fourth quarter of last 2021, the top chipset provider in the industry still remains to be MediaTek but has significantly declined in shipment as Qualcomm’s shipments rose by 30%
MediaTek has a 33% market share during the last quarter of the year 2021 which scaled down by 4% compared to 2020. Counterpoint revealed that MediaTek’s shipments dropped as smartphone manufacturers were overstocked as a result of fear of the chip shortage. Despite that, the Dimensity 9000 chip assisted MediaTek to retain its position as the biggest shipper of chipsets.
Counterpoint noted that there has been a heavier demand for 5G handsets and is expected to grow even more this 2022 as more consumers get into the 5G network. Meanwhile, Qualcomm dominates the premium chipset with its high-margin Snapdragon chips. The Snapdragon 5G baseband modem chips garnered 76% share compared to its 63% the previous year. Apple iPhone’s demand was a crucial player in this growth along with the Android flagships that are equipped with Snapdragon 5G modems.
