In a recent Instagram Reels post, Zuckerberg discussed Meta’s plans of developing AI in 2024 through a ‘massive compute infrastructure’. Zuckerberg then stated that said infrastructure will include 350,000 H100 graphics cards from Nvidia.
However, the Meta CEO didn’t mention how many graphics processing units (GPUs) have already been purchased. At the end of Q1 of 2023, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang noted that the H100 is among one of the products that has been surging in demand on a consistent basis.
As of 2023, the price range of the H100 ranged from $25,000-$30,000 from Nvidia and up to $40,000 on eBay. If Meta commits to this project throughout 2024, it would cost the company billions in expenditures.
Overall, Meta’s plans to enter the AI arms race is now in motion, with operations set to expand as its two major AI research groups – called FAIR and GenAI – are being brought together to accelerate the company’s efforts in developing AI in 2024.
In this video, Zuckerberg said building the best AI for chatbots, creators, and businesses requires more advancement in AI across the board. ‘Our long term vision is to build general intelligence, open source it responsibly, and make it widely available so everyone can benefit,’ he added in a post on Threads.
