MMDA considering fees for private vehicles that will use EDSA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has recently scrapped the modified odd-even scheme, but it is now studying “congestion pricing” that requires private motorist to pay a fee when passing through EDSA.

In a report by Inquirer.net, MMDA officer in charge and general manager Tim Orbos told reporters that a study is being conducted with the help of the government of Singapore, where “congestion pricing” has been in effect since 1975. The system has resulted in an “almost immediate 45-percent reduction in traffic and a 25-percent decline in vehicle crashes” in the said country.

The system will work somewhat similar to the e-pass scheme being implemented on expressways but without the toll gates. Instead, the government will keep track of motorists through state-of-the-art cameras set up on gantries.

“I think this is something we have to look at. I’m not saying we will already do it but we have to study it,” said Orbos.

  1. Seriously? Why make private car owners suffer? Ano plans nyo sa mga bus? Wala?! bakit ba?

    Let’s not copy what other countries are doing…. urban planning in the Philippines is not even the same as with other countries. Konting utak naman….

  4. Basta pagkakakitaan ng PERA madali talaga ang mga utak nila mag isip!!! mga ganid sa pera! himbis na magpatupad sila ng paraan na makakatulong sa pag ginhawa ng mamamayan. hindi! at pagkakakitaan ng PERA ang naisip nila para may dagdag kurakot sila!

    I’m not a Marcos fan pero nabasa ko lng sa history, may plano sana si Marcos na gawing DOUBLE DECK ang EDSA katulad ng Skyway sa SLEX before PP1 pero nung napatalsik na sya, napunta ang budget kung saan saang rehabilitation keme na mga may gawa ay yung nagpatalsik sa kanya kaya hindi na ito natuloy!

    sayang kung natupad or naipagpatuloy lng sana gawin ang DOUBLE DECK sa EDSA. laking ginhawa sana ng mga motorista!

  6. ok lang sana yung congestion charge, KUNG maganda ang serbisyo ng public transpo natin. kaya lang naman bili ng bili ng mga sasakyan ang mga tao eh dahil unreliable ang transpo dito sa pinas. kaya na-implement sa SG or iba pang bansa yung congestion charge eh dahil maganda ang service ng public transpo nila to the point na ang pagkakaroon ng private vehicle ang masasabing hindi masyadong practical.

  8. Nakakabwisit! Dagdag gastusin na naman! Mahal na nga lahat ng bilihin tapos eto pa idadagdag nila! Nakita nilang milyon milyon ang dumadaan sa edsa kaya yun naman ang pagkakakitaan nila. Provide us a reliable transpo system na to the point na hindi na namin need bumili ng sariling sasakyan. Provide us jobs na halos hindi na namin kelangan umalis ng bahay or mapalayo sa lugar namin. 3-5 Kilometer na nga lang ang distance inaabot pa kami ng 2 oras bago makarating sa office. Provide us work at home jobs malamang sa malamang no need na bumili ng sariling sasakyan.

  9. fees for private cars? for what? para macontrol ang dami ng private cars na dadaan ng EDSA kasi merong bayad?
    — not effective sa opinion ko, at the 1st place, meron silang kotse, that means nakakaangat sila sa buhay, and that means kaya nilang magbayad ng fees

    why not create an ODD/EVEN color coding scheme for PRIVATE cars? and stay with the old color coding sa PUBLIC buses / jeeps / vehicles?
    — commuter ako, wala akong kotse, and para sakin, mas malaki ang percentage ng cause ng traffic is PRIVATE CARS, example…
    1 bus – ilang pasahero ang kayang isakay nito? 60 nakaupo? eh yung mga nakatayo (sardinas mode) ilan?
    1 SUV – ilan ang madalas na nakasakay sa mga ganito? 1? driver? owner?
    now .. pagkumparahin natin ang SPACE na natatake ng BUS at ng SUV sa kalye.. ipagpalagay nating “1 bus = 2 SUV” … ngayon … 60+ na pasahero versus 2 driver owner …

    The poor car-owners need to pay those fees especially those car-owners without a GARAGE/PARKING!
    If you cannot afford the maintenance, parking etc of a car, DO NOT BUY ONE.
    This is why they’re POOR!
    This is why there are a lot of cars being repossessed by the bank -> LOW DP, MASA BUY, MASA CANNOT PAY

    Let’s bleed their coffers dry! STICK TO WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD!!!

  12. Hay. Sana ganyan din kaagresibo ang gobyerno sa pagsasaayos ng MRT.
    Kung laging nasisira ang MRT, ang ending lalong dadami ang pasahero na mag aabang at agawan sa bus. And the more buses, the more na makakadagdag pa sa bilang ng mga sasakyan sa Edsa na trapik palagi.
