Nikon intros multilayer CMOS image sensor

has recently announced its newly developed multilayer CMOS image sensor featuring a total pixel count of approximately 17.84 million pixels with high-resolution imaging of 1,000 frames per second, HDR characteristics of 110 dB, and 4K×4K.

The image sensor’s results were presented at the International Solid-State Element Circuit Conference (ISSCC) held in San Francisco, USA, last February 15, 2021.

The multilayer CMOS image sensor is identified to hold the industry-leading HDR characteristics of 110 dB and high-speed shooting of 1000 frames per second. This adopts a fine pitch laminated connection technology that can handle a 2.7 um pixel size; the top chip with the image sensor can be controlled directly from the logic circuit of the bottom chip, achieving high-speed video shooting with a wide dynamic range of 110 dB and 1,000 frames per second at a high resolution of 4K ×4K pixels while being a 1-type sensor size. Plus, high-speed read-out enables super slow motion shooting of up to 1000 frames per second. For shooting at 60 frames per second, a wide dynamic range of 134 dB is also achieved.

Furthermore, this also achieves exposure that can be controlled for each area of the screen. According to Nikon, the top tip has 16×16 pixels in one block, and 264×264 blocks (4224×4224 pixels) split on one screen. These blocks allow fine-grained control over exposure time for each area of the screen from the bottom chip. This feature also enables a wide dynamic range, allowing subjects with large light and dark differences to clearly capture the entire screen without crushing dark areas or overexposing light.

Nikon is also currently conducting research and developing state-of-the-art image sensors, which are the core of video technology, focusing on optical technology, precision measurement and processing technology, and material technology. Image sensors are used in the video field, such as digital cameras and smartphones, and various industrial fields such as automobiles. Image sensors with small size, lightweight, high frame rate, wide dynamic range, and high resolution are needed in either field.

With that said, the development of image sensor technology is essential for Nikon, and the company will continue to research and develop sensors based on market demands.
