Both Nintendo and Microsoft, in response to Sony’s PlayStation 5 price increase, confirmed that their flagship consoles won’t get price hike anytime soon.
In a statement issued to Eurogramer, Nintendo reaffirmed that it had “no plans to increase the trade price of its hardware.”
Nintendo further cited its company president Shuntaro Furukawa’s statement at the 82nd Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in June, “While we cannot comment on pricing strategies, we currently do not have any plans to change the price of our hardware due to inflation or increased procurement costs in each country.
“We will determine our future pricing strategies through careful and continued deliberations. While the final price to consumers is always determined by retailers.”
Microsoft on the other hand, is also not considering Xbox consoles price increase for now. It reiterated that prices of Xbox Series X or the Xbox Series S will remain at their suggested retail prices.
“We are constantly evaluating our business to offer our fans great gaming options. Our Xbox Series S suggested retail price remains at USD 299, the Xbox Series X is USD 499,” Microsoft said in a statement to Windows Central.
In the Philippines, Nintendo Switch (OLED) is currently priced at Php 16,795 via DataBlitz. The Xbox Series S and Series X are priced at Php 18,495 (512GB) and Php 34,995 (1TB), respectively.
Of course, this does not necessarily mean that their prices remain the same in the long-term. With the current state of global economic environment, especially the impact of global inflation rates and adverse currency trends, we might expect Nintendo and Xbox to follow suit of Sony’s console price hike some time later.
