The Ookla Speedtest Global Index report released on Tuesday revealed an improvement in the Philippines’ fixed broadband download speed for January, with the median speed increasing to 88.13 Megabits per second (Mbps) from the 87.13 Mbps recorded the month before.
This marks a 1.14% month-on-month growth and a 26.39% increase since the Marcos administration began in July 2022.
However, the country’s mobile median download speed slightly decreased, coming in at 24.59 Mbps compared to the 25.12 Mbps seen the month before.
National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez highlighted the NTC’s commitment to steadily improving internet speed in line with the president’s aim to advance the country’s digital connectivity.
Additionally, she looked forward to the commercial availability of Starlink in late 2023, which should further enhance internet speeds in the nation.
Streamlining and expediting the issuance of LGU permits from July 2020 to December 2022, along with the NTC’s approval of Starlink’s request for its user terminals to be classified as customer premise equipment, have both been instrumental in the improvement of the Philippines’ internet speed.
These developments enable telcos to quickly construct the infrastructure needed to boost services and connectivity.
