According to OpenSignal’s most recent report, smartphone users located in Seoul, South Korea experience the fastest speeds among Asia Pacific cities. Placing 9th is Manila, Philippines.
Opensignal conducted research that compared download speed experience and upload speed experience across cities in the Asia Pacific. The research aimed to justify why mobile operators would find it difficult to charge more for the upcoming 5G services if one were to look at the current speed experience of consumers. In the data presented, Seoul’s 56.3 Mbps download speed ranked number one, 41% faster than Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, and Taipei. As for Manila, it ranked at 9th with an 11.2 Mbps download speed experience, faster than Bangkok, Jakarta, and Phnom Penh.
As for upload speed experience, Seoul still placed at number one with 16.6Mbps, while Manila’s 3.3 Mbps ranked in between Jakarta’s 3.6Mbps and Phnom Penh’s 2.7Mbps.
Opensignal also stated that they recognize operators manage mobile differently, utilizing then a special measurement test called Video Experience. According to Opensignal, the Video Experience test is:
A metric derived from an ITU-based approach for determining video quality. The metric calculation takes picture quality, video loading time and stall rate into account. We report Video Experience on a scale of 0-100, with scores falling into the following categories:
75-100 Excellent
65-75 Very Good
55-65 Good
40-55 Fair
0-40 Poor
In the Video Experience score, Taipei ranked at first place, with Seoul falling into fourth, and Manila ranking at 11th with a Fair rating.
With 5G launching in more cities, Opensignal stated that locations which lagged behind in its tests should look into utilizing the capacity provided by the 5G technology and improve to establish themselves and give users a better mobile network experience.
