OPPO has just unveiled an environmentally-friendly tracker called the Zero-Power Tag prototype device at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona, Spain.
The Zero-Power Tag is a battery-free tracker that uses RF signal harvesting, backscattering, and low-power computing to track devices without a battery source.
In a video posted on OPPO’s official Youtube page, the company says that the Zero-Power Tag can provide accurate tracking even with the lack of power. The video shows that the Zero-Power Tag will be used in tandem with a proprietary app from OPPO.
What makes OPOO’s Zero-Power Tag tech so appealing is the fact that it will greatly reduce the number of batteries that may build up in landfills from such trackers and tags. Apple AirTags, as small as they are, still uses small batteries for them to function.
This gives Zero-Power Tags the one-up in offering a much more environmentally-friendly option for those who want to keep track of their devices.
Last year, OPPO announced that it was working with partners in the industry to make Zero-Power Communications devices that are battery-free, highly compact, ultra-low cost, and ultra-low power consumption. The Zero-Power Tag serves as the latest OPPO product to carry the Zero-Power Communications principle.
It is important to note that the Zero-Power Tag showcased at MWC is still a prototype, so it may not look or function exactly the same way when OPPO releases it to the public.
We do have to applaud OPPO for its efforts in lessening e-waste with its take on the tag/tracker device. We’ll update you if any developments come out about the tag and OPPO’s other new devices so stay tuned!
