Recently, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said that he wants the Department of Education (DepEd) to include computer programming in elementary schools.
Pimentel stated that with the prevalence of computer in our daily lives, coding is now an essential skill and it should also be treated like reading, writing, and arithmetic, not just as a career option. He also said that coding is a good way to introduce children to logic and mathematics.
“Coding also teaches perseverance and problem-solving. In writing a computer program, you have to be adept at breaking down tasks into simple problems the computer could understand. You also need to be patient to identify and correct bugs in the code. These are life skills that would benefit anyone in any field,” he said.
Pimental also said that teaching students how to code will improve the school’s performance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics branches. He also said that there’s won’t be a need to use advanced computers to learn the basics of coding since there’s Linux which is an open-source software.

Jude says:
since 90’s, may ilang schools nag o-offer ng comp programming. i know that kasi ako mismo naging teacher ng grade 6 sa programming (immaculate sa sta mesa. hindi ko lang alam kung andun pa yun). basic lang kasi nung try ko ang advanced, nahihirapan sila. At dito sa naga city, Parochial School is offering that, too. Dito nagtapos ng elementary si Jaime Fabregas. My freind teaches there.
