Samsung files patent for smartwatch w/ built-in projector

It seems like Samsung is planning to make our Iron Man dreams come true.

Just this February, Wareable reported that Samsung had filed a patent for a smartwatch with “a projection display on a side portion of the housing and configured to display information on a display area adjacent to the housing.”

Here’s a photo of the projector in action, as seen in the patent application:

The patent describes the proposed watch as a “wearable electronic device including a projection display capable of providing more information through a large screen while satisfying characteristics required for a wearable.”

We can already envision how this smartwatch-projector design can work to provide users with more information at a glance. This is especially perfect for those who don’t want to sacrifice functionality in getting info from their smartwatch but much prefer a smaller display on their wrist.

Let’s hope that Samsung figures out how, both software and hardware-wise, the projection display can serve less as a gimmick and more like an essential smartwatch feature.
