Samsung is taking SSD storage to a whole new level as they introduce their latest creation for next-generation enterprise systems. Meet the PM1643, Samsung’s 30.72TB 2.5-inch SSD.
The PM1643 makes use of the latest 512GB V-NAND technology to achieve the said capacity. Basically, the drive has 32 1TB NAND flash packages, which are 16 pairs of stacked 512GB V-NAND chips. It also has 40GB of DDR4 RAM. Samsung stacked 8GB DDR4 chips vertically via Through Silicon Via (TSV) to create 10 4GB DRAM packages.
Apart from the increase in storage, Samsung is also claiming a significant rise in performance due to the drives 12Gb/s SAS interface. Random read and write speeds are up to 400,000 IOPS and 50,000 IOPS respectively while sequential read and write speeds are up to 2,100MB/s and 1,700MB/s respectively.
It’s interesting to note that this whole package is crammed into a 2.5-inch frame. Samsung has already begun manufacturing batches of the 30.72TB in January and they plan to expand the lineup later this year to include several storage capacities — 15.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB, and 800GB.
Pricing and availability are yet to be announced.
