Samsung unveils its latest storage device for professionals and high-end PCs, workstations, and game consoles, the Samsung SSD 980 PRO.
The Samsung SSD 980 PRO is the company’s first consumer PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid-state drive (SSD). This SSD is optimized for handling data-intensive applications. It supports 4K and 8K videos and games and is equipped with key components including a custom Elpis controller, V-NAND, and DRAM. These are completely designed in-house to bring out the full potential of PCIe 4.0, providing sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and 5,000 MB/s, respectively. It is also twice faster than PCIe 3.0 SSDs and up to 12.7 times faster than SATA SSDs.
Moreover, the Samsung SSD 980 PRO comes with Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard technology for thermal control and minimizing performance fluctuations while keeping its compact and slim M.2 form factor. It also has a nickel coating on the controller as well as a heat spreader label on the backside of the SSD for efficient thermal management.
The Samsung SSD 980 PRO is available in 1TB, 500GB, and 250GB units. The first two will be released globally starting September, while the 2TB configuration model will roll out by the end of 2020. The Samsung SSD 980 Pro starts at USD 89.99 for its 250GB model.
