Samsung just made a breakthrough in display development as they officially announce an unbreakable smartphone panel. Their flexible OLED panel just got certified by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
This OLED panel was developed with an unbreakable substrate and an overlay window.
“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” — Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team, Samsung Display Company.
According to UL, which is an official testing company for OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor), the panel survived harsh real-time durability tests based on military standards. These durability tests include a 1.2meter drop above ground 26 times and high (71-degrees) and low temperature (-32 degrees) tests.
The “unbreakable” flexible OLED panel survived the tests and continues to function normally without any visible damage to its front, side or edges. Samsung added in a bonus test of sorts and dropped the panel from nearly 6 feet of the ground, to which it survived. Of course, we’ve yet to see the display in action first hand. Guess we’ll just have to wait until it’s mass produced.
