The Department of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said that the deadline for SIM registration is extended for 90 days.
“There’s a 90-day extension,” said Remulla prior to the fourth inter-agency meeting about the Oriental Mindoro oil spill.
Remulla made the announcement a day before the April 26, and despite the Department of Information and Communications Techonology’s (DICT) constant remark that there will be no extension.
The extended SIM registration deadline falls on July 25, 2023 should the extension period start from the original deadline as mandated by the law.
In accordance with the implementing rules and regulations for SIM Registration Act, the extension can even reach up to 120 days.
Remulla says that services that come with unregistered cellphones will be cut off by the telcos. Consequently, those who fail to register will not have access to social media.
The DICT has not made any announcement on the matter yet, but they disclosed on Monday that the possibility of extending the SIM registration was discussed on its Stakeholders Meeting on SIM Registration Act Implementation.
In the said meeting, the DICT and PTEs discussed solutions to problems faced by registrants, such as difficulties in obtaining government-issued IDs and documents, and improvements to the SIM registration process.
