Smart nabs exclusive rights to Google Nexus 5

The local release of Nexus 5 has been confirmed by LG Philippines and while no exact details on the date and the retail price, they’ve announced that Smart will be offering the device together with their postpaid plans.

No other details were given in the press release sent to us yesterday. As such, we can only guess the suggested retail price (between Php22k to Php25k) or the corresponding Smart postpaid plans that it will be made available for free (probably All-In-Plan 1800 or UnliData 2000).

  1. If the price will be in the range of 22-25k then its way overpriced.

Nexus devices aren’t suppose to compete with the price of other high end models.

Its only $350 USD off contract, so with contract it should cost less.

  2. Resistance is futile, the nexus 5 will be overpriced here in the phils, because the filipinos are cash cows for companies like Smart and LG. They all know that the more expensive the gadget, the more desireable they are for the filipino consumers. Filipinos will save money, avail of credit, take out a loan just to buy the latest expensive gadgets. Its a priority to filipino consumer to have those gadgets. This is how we live

    • NO.

    • NO.

    • NO.

    • TRUE.

    • THE UGLY TRUTH?

    • expensive? LG phones are worth to buy bec of the great quality.. :)

  3. The most Overhyped smartphone of the year, it’s just a watered-down G2, priced *almost* the same as the G2…Yeah sulit talaga lol

    • actually tama ka dyan abuzalzal.

G2 is available locally for 22k. So if the nexus 5 is 22k-25k you’re better off with a LG G2, better specs, better camera.

    • cge. dyan ka nalang sa CM phones and tablet mo. haha

    • but this has better software updates…and i think for others this is priceless.

    • It may be a watered-down G2, but that’s in terms of hardware only. Look at Optimus G and nexus 4 now in terms of dev support and android version.. G was left behind. But if you’re not into deep customization, stay with G2.

    • That is bcuz og and nexus 4 are same specs in terms of hardware just the cam and storage are def but most are the same.. If u look at the benchmark they also the same.. And what will be u reason to upd8 always if u find ur devive stable already.. I got the g2 thu.. N5 is not even close..

    • well i think G2 and nexus 5 are great phones.. hehe :)

  4. This sucks.. I’m planning to get one if Globe releases it but exclusive for Smart?! damn! now I’ll just sell my HTC One instead to get this.

    • hhm…i guess you should switch now to nexus 5.hehe! its worth to buy. :)

  5. “As such, we can only guess the suggested retail price (between Php22k to Php25k)…”

This is one of the main reasons why I NEVER buy gadgets locally. At $375 (with tax and shipping) in the US, that’s only P16K. Dito, mag-babayad ka pa ng additional P6K-P9K na tax, tapos sa bulsa lang ng mga senador natin napupunta!

Buti na lang may biyahe ako lagi sa US twice a year. Malas na lang kayong lahat!

    • baka pwedeng magpabili sayo? para makatipid namman kami. douche.

    • U just got a trip to us malas n kmi kagad..hndi b pwede ikaw muna.. But yah nnakawin lng tax nyu so better to buy at grey market sometimes..

  6. Will this be unlocked? When Smart released the Galaxy Nexus, it was unlocked. Also, are they releasing the 32GB version? If not, I’ll just use shopandbox.

    • wow! im sure many people will switch to smart bcoz of the nexus 5 and the GPad! who wouldn’t be? they’re great products from a great brand!

    • ok ba sa shopandbox sir? nakakakaba kasi magtry eh..

  7. I view the Nexus 5 as an investment. Para di ka na papalit palit ng android phone (for some people.) Others would rather have it while some may not. Kanya kanyang preference lang naman yan. If you are the type that doesn’t want to wait an eternity before your OS gets updated then this phone is perfect for you.

    • The god-awful BATTERY leaves something to be desired. So, in the long run, mag-u-upgrade ka rin eventually because of the abysmal battery life.

      Lugi ka di hijo

    • Kaya nga sinabing to each his own eh. Things like that don’t matter to some people.

  8. Mga hampas lupa!, kung wala kayo pambili wag kayo maginarte. Mga dukha na nga ang luluho pa. JOKE.

  9. Sir Yuga, is Php22k to Php25k for the 16gb or 32gb?

    • peo ang ganda ng nexus 5 ha….

  10. Any word when LG retailers will have this for sale? Sana sabay sila sa smart.

    • Staff at the LG Lounge in Megamall are pretty convinced they won’t release it locally. But I’m still hoping. I call them at least twice a week. LOL!

    • I cant remember a high end phone that was never released to retailers aside from the Iphones before, I usually its the carriers that get the first batch. If wala sa retailers then bili nalang tayo as a prepaid user from smart, it wont be locked anyway. Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 was sold as unlocked. We can always prepare our non smart sim card and try it in before purchasing.

    • kaso sir kapag D820 unit ang gagamitin ng smart hindi yun compatible sa LTE bands ng globe, D821 unit daw ang compatible to both smart and globe LTE. Info to from some grey market shops sa pinas na available na ang 16gb na Nexus 5.
